May move to Vancouver

I'm in Montreal currently but considering moving to Vancouver because of the weather and the beach. Never been there before. Any suggestions? Where's the best place to rent a home, considering I have a family?

Anyone from Vancouver in here? Do you like it?

Spunky 02-01-2004 04:46 PM

Been here all my life.I love it..Housing is rather expensive unless you move to the fraser valley. The best place in Canada :thumbsup

Huggles 02-01-2004 04:48 PM

Lots of things to love, few things to dislike. :)

Tip: Avoid moving to Richmond, if there's an Earthquake, it'll sink, and you'll die.

It's pretty pricey here, what's your budget? Looking to rent or buy?

If you're raising a family, I'd recommend Langley... It's about half an hour outside of Vancouver, lots of family communities, clean city, doesn't have a lot of crime and drugs like the bigger suburbs...

Or, if you can afford it, North Vancouver is the way to go, but the prices go up practically every day.

Validus 02-01-2004 04:52 PM

Vancouver is dirty, a lot of homeless people. Germany is nicer :)

B40 02-01-2004 04:55 PM

Weather is good from what I hear...doesn't get too cold in the winters..

StuartD 02-01-2004 04:56 PM

Yup, been here for 10 years now and have NO plans on ever leaving.

I don't plan to pay much more than $1000/month to rent a 2 bedroom apt. Is that possible or are the prices really much higher than Montreal?

Is there lots of traffic in Vancouver? I hate driving in traffic.

Lol..It is a very clean city. Why do you think we have homeless people? The weather probably is a factor why people are coming here for the winter and probably our welfare system.I don't like seeing bums pan handle either.

Vancouver itself is dirty. DIRTY I say. Has a lot of nice and clean nature surrounding it, if you are fortunate to have a house there, its all good. DIRTY.

Both are reasonable so long as you stay out of the downtown core.
Oh, and avoid the bridges too.. if you don't like traffic.

But for that price, you should be fine for finding a place. It just might not be right downtown.

for $1000 a month you can rent out a basement...

Traffic wise, avoid rush hour.

If you're just getting an apartment, that'll be fine, especially in the suburbs.

Funny, I love when people resort to profanity. Vancouver used to be much cleaner years ago, since then it has been over run by homeless people, drugs and their dealers, prostitution, and crime. Vancouver Island is a nice place, Victoria for example.

You haven't been around here much the past year or two then I take it?

Funny you should pick Victoria. Victoria has way more bums per capita than Vancouver.

Vancouver's got a handful of ugly streets, as does any city. Stay away from 2-3 blocks on the edge of town, and you're fine.

yup, they rebuilt the washrooms at Main and Hastings and chased away the riff raff... although it's slowly migrating back, but not as bad as it ever was.

plus they completely rebuilt the park in front of the bus station and continue to do stuff like that all over the city in anticipation for the 2010 winter olympics.

Spunky 02-01-2004 05:11 PM

I don't think we would be getting the Olympics in 2010 if the city was dirty.Sure we have problems ,what city doesn't?

Oh, that?s cool. I mean I liked Vancouver, other then the traffic. But, that?s normal. Good to see that they are cleaning it all up.

Jman 02-01-2004 05:15 PM

Vitasoy 02-01-2004 05:16 PM

Not to mention if you're driving at any time of the day, and go through a greenlight, you're going to get killed when a street racer t-bones you going through the red light.

Oh, and if you avoid that, one of the vietnamese or east indian gangs will shoot you for looking at them wrong at the grocery store.

webgurl 02-01-2004 05:19 PM

Best city in Canada to Live .... 1K -- 2 bedroom can get you a place probably in the South/East Side of Vancity

Dveron 02-01-2004 05:20 PM

You do see quite a few homeless folks downtown but most of them are cool, they don't give you any shit.

Good 2 bedroom downtown would run you about 1800+. Kitslano or North Van you could probably get one for 1200 or so. You would get a nice place for sure further out for a $1000.

Canada.com has a good list.
