In general and roughly speaking, what % of sales does hosting cost for an active paysite?

Very many variables. It'd be best to host with someone who can easily and quickly meet any higher demands you may need as well.

Seperate servers are also sometimes good as well depending on the load the server has (talking about if you have free hosted galleries).

I've done some calculations on this and it seems hosting bill equals roughly 10-20% of total revenues.

If managed properly you can get to the lower segment of about 10% and if memebers are left to do as they please without say imposing a 1G dl limit per day its about 20%

I agree there are too many variables to answer this question intelligently. However good advice has been given in that you should go with a host that offers scalable plans.
