If you had 1 million USA dollars to invest

If you had 1 million USA dollars to invest in the internet, what would you do with it?

Flow 01-31-2004 05:39 AM

If you city is like mine, rental houses last about 15 seconds from when they hit the market. I would buy a couple of houses that needed a bit of work (so you can get a good deal), have them fixed up to the point they are nice enough for some mom/wife to say she would like to live there, and then rent them out. This would give you a constant stream of income being as the houses are paid for.

If you buy 3 houses for a total of about ($150,000 each) $450,000, and rent them for $1000 a month each, you have a monthly income of $3000 for the rest of your life (or whatever that would go for in your city). In about 12 years, your investment will have paid for itself, and assuming 3% inflation, would be worth about $650,000 - a $200,000 profit.

Oh yeah, then I would have a broker invest the rest of it for me. Not all in one place. I would take some risks but I would have some low risk stuff too.

Diversification in the key!

kmanrox 01-31-2004 05:41 AM

invest in whatever made you the 1st mill.... anything less would be uncivilized! (dunno, it sounded good at the time)

I have an investment that would return your money in under 2 years. Sucks because I don't have a million to drop into it.

hehe good scarface pic :)

wyldblyss 01-31-2004 06:47 AM

I would put some of it in my non-adult company, take a nice long vacation, pay off my mortgage and then invest the remainder is something low risk. I would just love to be mortgage free. As it stands now I will probably be dead before I pay this thing off.

VirtuMike 01-31-2004 07:00 AM

Mortgages are great! How else can you invest in a $300,000 opportunity for $60,000?

More specifically, how else can you take a 5% appreciating house and make 25% off it?

It's like buying low risk stock on margin and amplifying the returns. Plus the interest is tax free!

And just so you know, you ALMOST NEVER want to be mortgage free. As long as you have air left in your lungs, you should be continuously refinancing that (those) house(s) and continuously cashing out on the appreciation and reinvesting it.

But what do I know?

Trax 01-31-2004 07:03 AM

Do you need a business plan or something? :)
I'd invest it into the Eastern European countries with their rapidly growing markets. Escpeccially after they join EU their real estate would jump up by around 30%. What do you think? 30% in 6 months.

echodotcom 01-31-2004 07:09 AM

probably with stock

Alex Xe 01-31-2004 08:26 AM

In some countries possible do it over 15-20% per year if you work with estates and land. Cyprus - for example :)

Darren 01-31-2004 08:39 AM

buy mensniche.com off me , in fact , its worth more.

DVTimes 01-31-2004 09:00 AM

My question was for investing in the internet direct. I.e., websites, software or equipment.

FlyingIguana 01-31-2004 09:19 AM

OK. I would think about producing my own exclusive content and own server. But Iīm afraid there will be to think about qualified traffic, too.

Buying a website doesnīt make much sense when the name is not popular and known by many users. Success doesnīt depend on the website or the name, I suppose. When I was starting my first website in Europe, that one was very ugly and not professionell done at all. But the users liked the amateur story of two girls which were running the site to earn some money for their college fees.

So I think the best investment will be doing exclusive content and running own servers. Itīs just my opinion and of course not scientifically examined.

I on the other hand, have. And do. I won't wholely disagree with you, those things you mentioned can happen, no question. But there are ways of preventing it or minimizing the likelyhood of it happening.

For starters, buy rental property in locations that would be conducive to better living, in half-decent neighbourhoods close to a hospital and within range of schools, and a supermarket.

Advertise widely for a tenant. Meet each applicant and give them the usual tour, then select the best ones and sCREEN them. The mistake most people make is they accept the first schmuck that comes along waiving cash. Duh. Of course they will trash the place.

Check with their last landlord as to their behaviour. Check their references.

Get post-dated cheques for 12 months in advance.

Instruct the applicant before-hand on the rules you have. Print out those rules and get them to sign an agreement. Hey, it's something.

I've been a landlord for 8 years now and have never had to kick anyone out or had the kind of problem you described above. Using a million bucks to buy some rental property isn't all that bad an idea in my view.

IF I had to spend it for online stuff, I would outfit a bomb ass photo studio and webcam area, and expand my operations massively!

Za Ha 01-31-2004 01:42 PM

I would never (well maybe one day) invest that much on the internet. I would put it down as a 20% downpayment on a small building and have management rent it out for me.

RP Fade 01-31-2004 01:44 PM

Diversification is the key..

real estate, mutual funds, liquid cash and stocks
