Are there really such things as

paid apprenticeships?

Lemme 'splain. I need to know if there is such a thing as a paid apprenticeship for someone looking to become a UNIX systems admin.

If not, what tech schools are good for this? Ideas please. :) Thanks in advance.

Not a tech school but their program is very good for gaining hands on experience (with pay) while getting a degree.

Check out http://www.drexel.edu/ :)

For an outer-stater, the tution is kind-of high but there are a lot of grants available. The neighborhood is a bit scary but the campus is safe and it boarders with UofPenn.

Drexel has an excellent work program....and the neighbourhood has always been a bit scary...but, being so close to U of P, you're right near University City, which used to kick ass..don't know if it still does.

Probably shouldn't live in the neighborhood, then. :(

I can't really see anyone doing a paid apprenticeship for IT, where I'm from it's normally for trades (plumbing and stuff like that).

I had been told that there were paid apprenticeships here and there, but had never gotten a confirmation of it. I was hoping that someone here might know more about it.

:)

why worship when you can start your own church?

:glugglug

Babagirls 01-29-2004 10:57 PM

either paid with cash or with benefits, but yes.

e.g. A friend of mine went to Culinary School. Got an appr. down at the Grand Floridan in Disney World. He got paid (very little) for each working day, of course, free room, free access to any/all parks including up to 4 family/friends (not including him.) And family got some benefits too. Its been too long to remember all of them. Just wanted to give you an e.g. :glugglug

Gotta learn how to preach your gospel first. Don't run until after you walk. :glugglug

Thanks babababe. Girlfriend actually went and worked for the Rat last summer in Florida. :)

Being from California, yes the neighborhood is scary but safe if you know what element you are in. Can't say that a student graduating from Drexel will get their dream job, however, almost every graduating student has a job or has hands on experiences.

They have kiss-ass grants and partnered up with community colleges around the U.S.

Raven, if you haven't seen what UofPenn has done within their empire, you would be amazed. Safe to walk around Univeristy City, Phila, PA besides them screwing a lot of dumb land owners. :)
