NBC Dateline was INSIDE of PYTHONS offices

I'm writing this email to you because you are listed as the custodian of
record for content that was purchased or leased from your company by
PythonPays/Dollarmachine.

I wanted you to be aware of an incident that happened, before the holidays,
at our Toronto offices. A reporter from NBC Dateline in NYC posing as a
concerned parent who's 2 year old got a pornographic spam was able to get
access into our offices and ask staff numerous questions about our business.
They where also recording the responses with hidden cameras and microphones.

The reporter was John Hockenberry
http://www.msnbc.com/onair/bios/j_hockenberry.asp and he arrived in a
wheelchair with a male & female assistant. They initially lied and said they
had a meeting inside and needed help getting into the building. A couple of
our staff helped them into a service elevator and took them past security.

The next day, the same 3 people, went to the offices of one of our content
suppliers in New York and tried to interview them as well, asking questions
about Python and what they did to supply Python with pornography.

They may try to contact you or people within your company to ask questions
about your business. Our lawyers have suggested that the best way to deal
with any press is to be polite, listen to their questions, find out who they
are, get their contact information, and tell them you will write them back
with the information they require. It is best to say as little as possible
on camera and try to limit your contact with them. John Hockenberry has
written training manuals on undercover investigative journalism and they
know how to get you to talk. It is best not to head to head with them in
front of a camera.

The Federal Labelling & Record-Keeping Law 18 USC 2257 requires us to carry
your contact information on our sites and this is how you are connected to
us. Although it is highly unlikely that they will contact every person we do
business with, it is a possibility and we didn't want you to get caught
un-aware. Please pass this on to whoever you think is appropriate in your
company.

If you have any questions you can contact me at 416-534-5000 or
[email protected].

Thank you

This one has the potential to be an 'issue' outside of python...

.. nice to see people pay attention to security pre-cautions...

:thumbsup

WiredGuy 01-29-2004 03:42 PM

Wonder what kind of story they're compiling. First internext, now python's offices.

XBizLori 01-29-2004 03:42 PM

Isn't it illegal to tape / broadcast without someone's permission and I think false identity / trespassing is still illegal..

that is some balls.

Are they sending graphic spam? There is going to be a big crack down on this shit, most of the graphic spam I get is from American adult sites. Graphic spam gives the right logs for the fire.

It's up to corporations to protect your kids now? What kind of a crazy world we live in?

No but if its thrown in their faces its not fair. The argument for adult always has been if you dont like it dont look at it, thats hard when its in your email whether you want it or not and worst in your kids email.

crockett 01-29-2004 04:10 PM

didn't someone have some pics they posted of John Hockenberry in the wheel chair at internex.. Think he was posing with some models for a pic.... maybe everyone with pics should go back through and see if they caught him being naughty...

I'm pretty sure media has some kind of first ammendment protection for this. We all see the undercover stories happening on NBC and other news stations so I don't imagine its illegal.

it's not..you can pretty much tape anything for "news" There are limits, but not many, even parodies like air farce can tape things as well, and use it as a news satire.
This is how the girls gone wild style videos can do crowd shots, they're "reporting" on the event.

Actually, IIRC, one of the news magazines lost a lawsuit filed by Food Lion regarding their report on repackaging meats which included this kind of "investigative" tactic. I'll try and find the info...

DeanCapture 01-29-2004 04:23 PM

I told Python to stop send me that fucking spam - but they wouldn't listen. Hockenberry is a friend of mine - you are owned bitch :thefinger

Who wants to be next?

Peaches 01-29-2004 04:25 PM

Here's what I found in a fast search

There's a lot more out there. :winkwink:

IF I'm not mistaken, the reason for that was the person who got the job and went undercover there, filled out a false job application and lied about their info. I think it was more about the lying on the application, than it was the undercover part, but I may be wrong.

Dawgy 01-29-2004 04:27 PM

shouldnt a private office be just that? private? to me its no different than a private home. they have no right to bring hidden cameras in, lie, ask questions, etc. i hope python sues the shit out of them.

tony286 01-29-2004 04:31 PM

Parents set up a email address for the kid so grandma can write her grandchild and they think its cute([email protected]). You have your kid on your lap lets see what grandma wrote us. There is a email that says we spoke last night, you open it with the kid on your lap and its some girl sucking on a dick or a girl butt ass naked spread wide open. No one should get graphic email unless they went on a adult site and double opted in that they want to recieve graphic emails. Would you put graphic pics on peoples cars or on their front doors or in their US mail box in front of their house ,its the same thing?

I have to honestly say I didn't look into it enough to know, but you could be 100% right.

You are partially correct. The person lied, got a job as a supervisor and then ordered the employees to change expiration dates on products. Then the reporter did a story that basically said this is how Food Lion does business when in fact it was the reporter that made the employees do it. That's why Food Lion won the lawsuit.

ulfie 01-29-2004 04:47 PM

Oh, and not to stray this thread totally off topic I've been in Python's offices. Not much to see other than people working and a lot of pinball machines.

I'll be watching for the black helicopters tonight.

This isn't too far off from what the FCC is doing with shock radio shows.

When the companies presenting the potentially obsecene material don't take responsibility for their own conduct, whether it's irresponsible spamming or irresponsible broadcasting, outside agencies step in and try to regulate.

400,000 AOL USERS THINK THERE'S TOO MUCH OBSCENITY ON THE AIR

They could just change the channel if they don't like it. Just a thought....

RockDaddy 01-29-2004 05:21 PM

How did it go from a guy asking a few questions regarding his kid receiving porn email to them getting a complete list of all their clients??

Rich 01-29-2004 05:40 PM

Crazy, I wonder when it's going to air.

JunkyardDog 01-29-2004 05:46 PM

I was suprised to see him on the show floor in Vegas. He did seem to be enjoying himself whenever I saw him.

I recognized him right away, but I also watch Dateline a lot, so I am sure many people would talk to him with no idea of who he is and what he is best known for.

TheGoldenChild 01-29-2004 05:52 PM

Media can be your best friend, or your worst enemy
Anytime one is ambushed and unprepared it's not good-

Mike Wallace makes a living at it-

My guess issome producer at NBC got the porn spam and traced it back to a sponsor-

It had to be a slow week for news there- and they went digging for gold-

It's a shame- I bet Hockenberry at least had some fun online-

I see a lot of wheelchair bound guys at these shows

wdsguy 01-29-2004 05:54 PM

social engineering at its best

True but personally I'm not getting any spam at all on my yahoo email account.
I despise those who send spam especially since I try to take care of the client as much as I can and they make more money than me by pissing people off and filling there inbox with crap. Nevertheless I thing Yahoo anti-spam thing works well and Microsoft promised that there won't be spam in 2005? Let's wait and see.
