404ing a large TGP...

Say you had a TGP doing 75K-100K a day.
What would be the consequences of 404ing and sending the traffic to a PPC program or something else for 1 or 2 days every month.
Sure, you'd potentially lose a few bookmarkers here and there, but would the benefits outweight the consequences?

your trades would be pissed off?

sandman! 01-28-2004 12:42 AM

unless they are all bookmarkers your trades would get pissed and stop trading with you.

That would be a bad idea.

psyko514 01-28-2004 12:49 AM

hmm... trades. well that was a blatantly obvious answer.
good thing i don't have a large tgp :)

All you'll end up doing is turning away your visitors from ever going to your site again if all they get is a circle jerk. :2 cents:

LOL would you like me to come over kick you in the nuts and take your money. Because if you are seriously thinking of doing this you are CRAZY!

this is not a cool idea. put up a full page ad with "No Thanks Let Me In", but never just redirect all traffic. If you are going to do this, at least grab a geo targetting script to get the most out of the traffic. i think nibbi has one for $45.

psyko514 01-28-2004 01:09 AM

just for the record, i don't even have a tgp pulling in 100 uniques a day, let alone 100000 uniques a day.

i got the idea because i remember a while back, the(g)thang did this to lil2rich's tgps, and i was reminded of this today.

but i completely forgot about trades. i think the bookmarker impact would be very minimal if it was only one day, or 12 hours on two seperate days. but the trade impact would obviously be severe.

also, if you're selling advertising space, that's more trouble.

Why would you need to 404 the homepage?

Just set-up a huge block of adds in the top scroll, and make the folks scroll down to get in.

Well, I didn't exactly mean 404. Basically, my idea was to replace the index page with a blank page with a large text link saying "Click here to enter GayMonkeySex TGP" and have that link go to a PPC sponsor.

Say 75% of your surfers click the link to enter. That could make you upwards of $2250 on a 100K TGP at 3 cents a click.

That would work...

Make it a long scroll to enter, and that would do it :)

Personally I don't think it's a good idea. Maybe sneak a few blind links into your listings won't piss too many people off. I've never tried something like this though so I guess you could try it as an experiment :D

I purposely rename my TGP page every few months when the bookmarkers on it get high. A 404 on my site is set up to load my main page. Once the old TGP page is removed, it at least makes those bookmarkers visit the front page once again.

Its kinda like skimming isn't
