ok, many of you know I collect high end cig lighters.

I bid this lighter

and my bid cap was $2500. all week it stayed at $1150 (my bid) till the last second when someone came in and bid $2550.

ok, i lost the lighter - no biggie.


here's where it gets interesting. The NEXT day I get this email.

my last bid was $1150, and she should have NEVER known what my max bid on this item was. I left thinking that she used a friend to find out how much my max bid was to milk me out of as much money as possible - which is a scam an illegial according to ebay's rules.


i send her a reply telling her I'll only pay $1150, and if she refuses I'll report her to ebay and the police for running a scam.

e-bay is a game, the high bider may have been phony. just to push your price up, happens all the time.

Thats why you should always use a proxy bidding website . They don't charge much but your bid is only placed 6 seconds before the end of the auction .

The fact that the high bidder backed out is suspicious, but it doesn't look like shill bidding to me. buylighter is obviously a lighter collector with a high feedback, and buys lighters from many different sellers:

...only bidding on an auction by this seller the one time, in the past month or so.

However, it could be a case of finding something out about the lighter after he won it... Something that makes it worth less than he thought. Or he could have had problems with the payment, like she said.

I would personally ask her to relist it, and then not bid my max until the last 10 seconds of the auction.

Almost forgot... Do you have any idea where the bid was at when the reserve was met? She probably won't sell it for less than her reserve price.

I've seem some pretty fucked up ebay scammers.
But it sounds like ebay showed how much your cap was and the seller saw that. Maybe not though. you should get it checked out.

I got fucked out of $1100 by someone here once for a laptop that was never shipped.

$2k for a lighter is just plain silly, but if its a collection hobby if yours go ahead.
