Is it a good idea to make content on a paysite undownloadable?

Sure there will be some surfers that will find a way to save the content. But in general, is good for business to make the content on a paysite very hard for them to download it? The last thing I want is for surfers to save my content on their computer.

Why?

hes probably worried about people downloading it all then sharing it on p2p or cancelling their subscriptions after downloading all the content

reguardless of the setup, this can and will be done no matter what you do. the only solution to this type of "ripping" is by having daily download limits (I believe Pennywize has that option)

mistersoft 01-26-2004 03:09 PM

I wouldn't join a site like that.

now you are getting into credit card fraud, stay on track.

Well I think surfers that really like your site wouldn't be able to use the softwares that eat all your site . That will probably save you BW :)

Whatever the arguments for mistersoft summed it up...

I'd never join a site like that and if I did by mistake would cancel very quickly. Streaming stuff is a pain in the ass especially when you're feeling horny. You want stuff you can download and (once downloaded) view there and then when you dick's out and your trousers are down by your ankles. Having the ISP or Internet traffic make the streaming (if you were using it) stop and start every few seconds stops Mr Pinky being hard and happy! :)

tootie 01-26-2004 03:24 PM

I would never do that to my members. If I joined a site like that I'd cancel in a heartbeat, and I've been in this business for about 7 years now. I know content costs alot of money to buy and produce and I know it sucks to waste bandwidth and get cancellations from the leeches, but I'd much rather waste some bandwidth on a few leeches than piss off ALL of my valuable recurring members. That's just my opinion, though. There are two sides to the story and I understand that. :)

Watermark all your content with your url. Then if they trade it, free advertising.

Rick Latona 01-26-2004 03:27 PM

If you make it downloadable you better make sure that it is protected via DRM (Digital Rights Management).

I think that's covered in "How to piss off your customers 101"

Your paying members have paid for the pics, they're stored in their cache anyway. Why punish them? Rebills are how you eat, and irritating your members will leave you hungry

I would say, that people join pay sites in order to 'own' the content. I will save pics all the time, often not looking at the pic at all, but its fun to know I have it.

If I joined a site that did not let me save pics, then would soon cancel. But often you can find ways around it. At worse, you just get a art package that will do screen saves, then crop the pic.

It would be like paying for a TV station, then finding I could not record a film from it.

The simple option is put your web address on all your pics. if someone does post them, then its great advertising.

Why not use a DRM solution that de-activates the content when their membership runs out?

DRM isn't an entry level solution.

i'm not sure how they do it but this paysite stores their movies AND images in wmv format that only works on one computer

Seems like a good alternative.

Quotealex 01-27-2004 11:05 AM

But I really don't like the idea of paying $15,000+ to build a paysite so that some joe can donwload all my content just because he paid $15-$30 to join my site!

Plus, some girls will be complaining that their pics/videos are all over the internet and because this they are upsetting their boyfriend, familly and friends!

latinasojourn 01-27-2004 08:39 PM

unfortunately it's a trade-off either way.

surfers want to save the stuff they like on their HD.

and you will have surfers posting your good stuff on usenet, whether you like it or not.

best compromise probably is put a small watermark on your original stuff. so at least if it's posted or hot linked you'll get some action on it.

Of course it is, you just have to find a provider that works based on a percentage of sales, not a flat fee upfront.
