Can women tell the difference between real diamonds and cubic zirconia?

just wondering

Chris 01-25-2004 11:31 PM

yes

Freeze 01-25-2004 11:35 PM

Maybe if they had one of each, side by side. Otherwise I think most would have difficulty. My other half is a gemstone fancier and she has difficulty.

But their jeweller certainly can tell :)

I forget what it's called but there's a new synthetic diamond that's fairly cheap that there is no fucking way they can tell the difference.

Yes, it's a gene we're born with. It's also referred to as "I found out you bought me cheap shit you bastard and now I'm going to humiliate you and make you suffer for it for the rest of your life".

Brad Xtremepay 01-25-2004 11:44 PM

Holly, I am very threatened by you.

digipimp, there is ways to tell the difference between the new "cultured" diamonds from Apollo and Gemesis. Although many jewelers could be fooled. With Gemesis stones, they have small hints of magnetism in them, put a magnet near the stone and you'd see. Both companies will regulate their stones from what i have heard. Either way, there is always GIA.

CZ stones have more of a blueish/rainbowish fire in them, anyone with any kind of experience can tell the difference quite easily.

the new stones like digipimp has mentioned could cause problems.

Yep I know the flaws they have but they're minimal compared to what you get with a CZ. Plus you don't have to think of all the people that bleed and die just to get you some million percent marked up fucking rock for a dumb bitch.

aflex 01-25-2004 11:52 PM

back to your title, most women cant. but over time, if the CZ stone was inserted in an engagement ring. the CZ stone will wear down, crack, or have more of a dull fire to it. But earrings don't get banged around as much, so sometimes they can get passe doff as studs to women.

either way, let your girl know what she's wearing.

For those of you saying yes: you have no fucking clue, do you??

It's impossible to tell the difference between them just by looking at them...

That's called superficiality. Women are masters of it.

you're an idiot.

digipimp, theres a cool diamond company from Canada that has their whole marketing campaign about not being blood diamonds. The stones are mined in Canada, and each stone has a polar bear on the girdle. http://siriusdiamonds.com/

That's utter bullshit. I used to be a manufacturing jeweller, and if you have enough experience, the difference is unmistakeable. Zirconia has a much harder glare. Zirconia refracts twice, diamonds once. (A simple test is looking at a needle through it...on any given facet, you'll see 2 needles through a zirconia, and just 1 through a diamond) And in my experience, among lay people, women are much better at spotting it than men....probably because they spend more time looking at jewellery :)

aflex 01-26-2004 12:16 AM

with the needle suggestion, you could also place the CZ on its table over a line on a piece of paper. if you can see the line through the stone, its a CZ. (this is just a quick way of checking)

pamphage 01-26-2004 12:17 AM

of course they do. it's called taking it to their favorite jewlist and asking for an appraisal. and believe me. bitches do that shit all the time.

I took my wife to the jewelry store and let her pick out her own diamond ring. Made my life easier.

She might not notice right off but when she drops it for cleaning at the jewelers you can bet she's going to know soon.

dig420 01-26-2004 01:47 AM

so how do you go about buying a diamond without getting ripped off? what do you look for?

I hate the fact that women put so much emphasis on a useless trinket.

shit.... I wouldn't mind spending the money if it was just for something USEFUL or practical in any way. I'd rather spend a couple thou buying them a second hand car or a new wardrobe or paying for tuition or just about ANYTHING besides a damn rock that isn't worth 10% of the retail price in the first place.

Elli 01-26-2004 02:13 AM

Hey, if you tell her it's an expensive diamond, the first thing she'll want to do is add it to the house insurance. To do that, it needs to be professionally appraised. It's not just greed, you know.
