Number1Thumb 01-23-2004 10:52 PM

He did not say but the page now goes to hs forum and he will have a press release rearding his decision to settle:glugglug

tbabe 01-23-2004 10:53 PM

they obviously offered him enough cash to make it worth his while. He won, not MS

Rorschach 01-23-2004 10:55 PM

Fucking cunts. Fuck I hate Micro$oft! :feels-hot

Even if he didn't actually settle and they just bought it off him under the table, they're still cunts and I still hate them passionately.

Raven 01-23-2004 11:10 PM

Microsoft had to do this, otherwise, they could lose their trademark.

Besides...do you really believe this seventeen year old punk didn't know exactly what he was doing when he named his company 'soft'?

Microsoft should have buried this idiot.

Gheenz 01-23-2004 11:16 PM

Good! That little bastard! MS rules!

webair 01-23-2004 11:19 PM

In exchange, Microsoft will pay for Rowe's expenses, the cost of switching over to a new site, provide training for certification on Microsoft's products, a subscription to Microsoft's developer program Web site, and an Xbox video game console with games, as well as an invitation to bring his parents along for a visit to Microsoft's Redmond, Washington, headquarters for an annual technology fair.

lol

Rictor 01-23-2004 11:29 PM

He made out like a bandit for a worthless $10 domain.

Rictor 01-23-2004 11:30 PM

Of course, that domain is probably worth about $1,000 right now beccause of all the type-ins it's getting from national media attention.

LMAO The kids name is Mike Rowe. So anything SOFT is trademarked now? I don't think this is what the law intended regarding trademarks.

pushpills 01-23-2004 11:39 PM

What the kid did was purposeful.

And, I think this is exactly what the law intended regarding trademarks.

Yeah, he was sitting there and he knew that if he registered the domain, he'd get thousands of type-in hits dailt from people who can't spell.

and if you really think about it, his parents purposely named him Mike so that he could do this.

greedy bastards.

... I can tell youi've studied law for 9 years in camebridge.

Carrie 01-24-2004 01:51 AM

The kid is a designer.
If he hadn't *purposely* wanted to make a play off of Microsoft's name, he would've gotten MikeRoweDesigns.com instead of MikeRoweSoft.com Designs.

It was intentional, and he made out like a bandit.

I can see him on apple-style commercials 2 years from now (post-certifications).... "My name is Mike Rowe, software engineer."

myjah 01-24-2004 01:54 AM

that's crazy...he made out on that deal. never thought that was gonna happen

Just curious... You WOULDNT happen to be using an MS OS would you?

KC 01-24-2004 03:11 AM

The kid made out pretty well.

Cleary he did it on purpose. He said in an interview that he was looking for something to set himself apart from other applicants when trying to get into college.

I think he accomplished that. He Learned some valuable lessons about law, publicity, negotiations, etc. He got his 15 minutes of fame.

Maybe 20 years from now he'll take over the helm of Microsoft's new Mars campus.

As I have said from the beginning, I was not into this to make money and therefore I would like to offer the following:
Return donations to those who would like their donation back (Minus PayPal fees).

Donate these funds to a terminally ill children?s charity as they could use this much more than I.

Or your suggestions.

Although the kid put his foot in his mouth by saying on the news that he bought the domain because it sounded funny ( considering the name it sounds like )

I still dont think he was infringing OR that he would have lost in court.

If they didnt offer him something he felt worthwhile , he would NOT have settled. He was offered FREE court expenses by several prominent lawyers, so he wasnt worried about the legal costs.

I have had enough of these type of domains to have a pretty good understanding of how the law works , and i also know that nobody wants to fight these cases unless its the last resort.

I have been sued over domain names that "supposedly infringe on others" and have settled ( WON ) in every single one. They love to threaten you , but in the end , they understand its about the money . If they can save some by settling , they will.

Volantt 01-24-2004 09:37 AM

MS certification and training. Not bad for a teen, some people pay good money for that kinda stuff.
