How do you lose control of a Cadillac? Those things will drive themselves... :helpme

Theo 01-23-2004 06:03 PM

damn, Newton ruled

DeadFidel 01-23-2004 06:03 PM

That sucks. There has to be an age limit for driving, or a re-test at a certain age at least.
My Father was 79 when he got killed in a car crash also. He shouldn't have been driving, but we (our family) didn't have the heart to tell him, nows he's dead.

RIP dude, thanks for the photos.

I have a couple of his books around here somewhere. Some I've had for years and years - going back to when I first started learning to shoot myself. Made for great study material -

Herb Ritts was another awesome photographer whose books I have. He died back in 2002. All the greats are moving on man.....

d*

To bad :-(

I always liked big nudes.

Peter Romero 01-23-2004 07:13 PM

Damn, that sucks. I shot for his assistant for a shampoo campaign a few thousand cheesburgers ago. I met him at the studio, he answered the door, I thought he was the assistant, not the photographer. He showed me to the make up artist & to his assistant who was to shoot the job that day. I thought: What a humble man, trains his assistant to shoot for him & assists in helping him on his shoot. I think it was a Paul Mitchel brochure - I was naked and hugging some naked chick. Anyways - a GREAT photographer, may he rest in peace.

Damn :(
Newton was one of a handful of the true great ones in Photography.
I first discovered him when I was 15 years old in an issue of Collector's Photography (anyone rememeber it?). I collected everything I could get of his. I considered him, Ralph Gibson, and Jeanloup Sieff to be 3 of the best people to ever capture the human form. Not surprised he died in front of the Chateau Marmont . He shot a ton of stuff there. He will be missed.

KRL 01-23-2004 09:06 PM

What a shitty way to die. He was one of the greatest photographers ever.

Rest In Peace

latinasojourn 01-23-2004 09:17 PM

not just a great photographer, but a guy who did things his way.

a trend setter, not a follower, who did not kiss an art director's ass.

my favorite photographer.

if a shooter shot hardcore in a stylized way (such as) helmut newton that shooter would make a mint.

his images are provocative, intelligent.

he was not an advocate of shooting thousands of images to get one keeper. he was frugal, he called it "a waste of good film".

he was fussy. he set up the shot in his mind, and only when the scene was exactly right did he trip the shutter.

one of my favorites is "girl looks at a man". you see her mind at work in the image.

married to the same woman many years who i think managed his work.

class guy, all around. a huge loss to the art world.

Paul Markham 01-23-2004 10:01 PM

RIP Helmut, you left your mark on the world and a lot for us to remember you.

camsource 01-23-2004 11:29 PM

Newton was fantabulous :(

LiveDose 01-24-2004 12:12 AM

He certainly left his mark in the industry.

R.I.P.
