176 Pound Tumor on Woman
Woman Undergoes Surgery To Remove 176-Pound Tumor
Woman 'Felt Free' After Operation
POSTED: 5:42 p.m. EST January 22, 2004
BUCHAREST, Romania -- Before her tumor was removed, a Romanian woman weighed more than 260 pounds. Now, she weighs just 88 pounds.
Doctors performed an eight-hour operation Wednesday to remove the 176-pound benign tumor.
One of the surgeons said the woman "felt free" after the tumor was removed.
The woman has neurofibromatosis, a progressive disorder that causes disfiguring tumors to form on nerves through her body.
The 46-year-old has been bedridden and unable to care for herself for three years. Doctors said she'll still have to undergo skin reconstruction surgery.
A Chicago plastic surgeon offered to perform the operation for free after the Romanian government said it couldn't afford to send her to the United States.
In 2000, the surgeon removed a 200-pound tumor caused by the same disorder from a Michigan woman.
