selling a diamond ring

GFY being such a diverse source of knowledge, I thought I'd ask here...

A couple years ago a friend of mine broke up with his fiance, and gave me the ring.
I've now carried it though a couple of moves, but I really don't want it.
I took it to the mall for a free appraisal and they quoted me $300;
but they don't buy rings, only take them as trade-in on other diamond rings.
I don't even like diamonds! so...

what's the smart way to sell a diamond ring? (don't say eBay)
I am going to guess a few of you have experience selling stolen jewlery :winkwink:

What's wrong with eBay?

There's 13,000 rings on eBay and it looks like they get a lot of bids.

you could put an add in the paper but then people are gonna call you all the time. quickest way is a pawn shop i think, but you'll never get close to what it's worth.

might as well call it a lose now and save yourself some time.

what its worth is what someone is willing to pay for it. Cash value on a 300 appraisal is 10 % or 30 bucks :2 cents:

By the sounds of it you didn't pay for it. Anything you get for it is pure profit. Go pawn it and get rid of it. You might only get $30 or so but its better than a kick in the nuts :)

yeah. he said he paid more. :1orglaugh
but then I also wondered if they were being honest,
since they were trying to get me to trade it up.

They have 5-600% mark up at the retail level on jewellery, so if you sell it used expect to get 10% of what you paid for it. If it dosent sell in a timely manner it gets broken up for the parts:2 cents:

Agreed. Diamonds are the biggest ripoff out there, IMHO. I have diamonds I've inherited, but after trying to sell my engagement ring, I learned the markup is absurd.

For those considering marrying me - I want land. :thumbsup
