Can you juggle?

I learned a couple years ago, and have taught several people how to since then. It does make some new connections somewhere in your brain...kind of crazy.

Study: Learning to Juggle Causes Changes in Brain
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...ce_juggling_dc

Mastering the skill increases the amount of gray matter in areas of the brain that process and store visual information, proving what was not thought possible -- that new stimuli can alter the brain's structure.

A comparison of brain-imaging scans of non-jugglers and other volunteers before they learned to juggle and three months later, revealed an increase in gray matter in certain areas of the newly trained jugglers' brains.

I'm pretty pro with 3.

On-top 01-22-2004 09:46 PM

That's all I can really do, too. 4 is a whole new level. LoL.

Plan9 01-22-2004 09:48 PM

I can do alot with 3...some behind the back/under the leg stuff. And can juggle basketballs. Never learned how to do anything with more than 3 though.

I can't do anything fancy, but I always have juggle balls and other odds 'n ends laying around that I can juggle. When people stop by my place, most of them pick something up and juggle. I've taught like 5 or 6 people to juggle in the last 2 years. Most of them learn a lot easier than I did...some of them pick it up in 20 minutes to an hour. Once you learn, it really is relaxing..and a fun way to bring your skills together.

I thought it was crazy seing this study where it actually causes grey matter to appear in the brain. No wonder you get that sense of satisfaction once you learn. Hahah.. :thumbsup

It just takes a little practice. Get 3 tennis balls...and google can probably teach you. I had a friend teach me, but she taught herself when she was like9 or something. And DrinkingHard taught himself... :winkwink: Maybe he can give you some pointers....

A guy at Disneyworld taught me how to do 4, but I'm not good enough with my left hand to do it.

You can juggle two in one hand, right? You do 2 in each hand with both hands, alternating. He said the trick was to keep it smoothly going and not do the same motion with each hand...

:2 cents:

Sweet. I can do two with my right hand, but my left hand is a dumbass. I'll have to keep practicing...

I can do 4...for a couple tries. Problem is keeping the rhythem going, its incredibly hard. Just takes practice, Id imagine. Normally Im dextrous and quick to pick things like this up...but juggling 4 balls pretty much baffled me. oh, and spare the puns on that one, please ;D

myjah 01-23-2004 01:34 AM

i cannot juggle. i cannot yo-yo. and i cannot make the bouncy ball on a string hit the freakin paddle. i give up.

Buy a drum. You need to discover rhythm. :winkwink: Get you some kind of hand drum, conga or djembe that you can beat the fuck out of when you're stressed. After a while, you'll start to figure it all out. Seriously...

Shoehorn! 01-23-2004 02:43 AM

I can do 3 fairly well, but I always end up walking forward for some reason. Every now and then I can get fancy and do something silly. Juggling is fun.

flashfire 01-23-2004 02:45 AM

I'm okay with 3

eroswebmaster 01-23-2004 03:08 AM

Gonna quick post and then go to bed....

Anyway...tips on learning how to juggle.

It's all psychological.

The key thing is to learn not to worry about that 3rd ball in the air.

Only concern yourself with the 2 in your hands. It's amazing how your brain will automatically adjust your hands to find the 3rd ball as it drops down.

Lesson 1:

Start by practicing your tossing arch.

When tossing the ball into the air you want to make a nice arch about eye level.

Best thing to do is just take a single ball and toss from your right hand to your left hand once again keeping it at eye level.

When you toss the ball there shouldn't be much arm movement...mainly elbow and wrist movement. The more arm movement you have the less control you have.

Do this back and forth until you feel comfortable with how much power you will need.

Lesson 2: The Ball Drop

Start with let's say your left hand.

Put the ball 1 into your left hand...take ball 2 with your right hand and just hold it over your left hand.

Now just drop ball 2 from your right hand into your left and as ball 2 drops bring your left hand up to catch it while releasing ball 1.

DO NOT WORRY ABOUT CATCHING BALL 1.

Just do this over and over with each hand until you get comfortable with this.

Lesson 3: Combine Ball Drop With Tossing

Now instead of dropping the ball into either hand this time you will toss it from one hand into the next.

ONCE AGAIN KEEPING YOUR ARCH AT EYE LEVEL.

start with ball 1 in your left hand and ball 2 in your right hand.

Now toss ball 2 in a nice eye level arch over to your left hand. As ball 2 starts to descend bring your left hand up to meet the ball while releasing ball 1 underneath it in another arch over to your right hand.

Don't worry about continuity at this point. Just do this over and over with each hand until you feel comfortable with however much power you will need to use.

ONce you feel comfortable enough to move on you will now need 3 balls.

2 in your left hand *balls 1, 3* 1 in your right *ball2*.

Now start by tossing ball 1 from your left hand in that arch I wrote about to your right hand as it descends your right hand will come up releasing ball 2 underneath ball 3...as ball 2 makes it's arch and starts to descend towards your left hand you will now bring your left hand up to meet ball 2 as it releases ball 1 underneath.

The key thing once again it's all in the mind. If you just remember you always have 1 ball in each hand and 1 in the air and all you have to do is just swap them out to make room you will be cool.

Get over the psychological part of it and you're golden.

I've been stuck on 5 balls for almost 20 years now :( I can do 4...I also learned a number of other juggling equipment like devil sticks, pins, cigar boxes etc.

Anyway I'm off to bed :)

DWB 01-23-2004 03:22 AM

I can do 3 balls no prob. I can also do Flaming Pois.

Ash@phpFX 01-23-2004 03:44 AM

i can juggle pretty well, balls, rings, clubs you name it. also can do plenty of tricks, different styles and stuff. by the way 5 balls is easier than 4, i cant do 4 at all. if you are good at 3, try a 5 ball cascade. i have found that some people can shower 5 balls easier than they can do 5 ball cascade too, its weird.

GonePhishing 01-23-2004 07:10 AM

I can do three and a lot of tricks. I can just juggle four okay though. I had no idea it was changing my brain!

mrthumbs 01-23-2004 07:14 AM

juggling is for clowns

Great tips. I learned in grade school and rip it with 3. The way I was taught is that you extend your arm up and out as far as you can comfortably. Now look at your hand. That should be the highest point in which you arc the objects and where you should focus your eyes.

Snowman 01-23-2004 09:10 AM

Yeah I learned to juggle at a young age, Self taught

I was smarter then too, before I killed my brain with drugs and all

It's very fun. A friend and I started an African drum store a couple years ago. It was such a cool experience..we would let people play whatever they wanted. Little kids would come in and just hammer on a bunch of drums, and you could see that they 'got it.' :)

But everything is rhythm, so it makes sense. Juggling is rhythm, you walk in rhythm, talk, sing, and dance in rhythm, fucking is all about rhythm. I highly recommend you buy a drum and abuse it for a couple years. :thumbsup

Great posts eros and asher. I'm going to have to try and learn 5 now...see if I can figure it out.

Haha, i can do 5 with fabric, because it can stay in the air longer. Next convention feel free to ask me though :D

XxXotic 01-23-2004 11:26 AM

i can do 4 for about 5 or 6 tosses then my brain goes into meltdown and i get to play that fun game 4 ball pickup

3 i can do all day with my eyes closed, clubs, balls, ribbons, whatever doesn't much matter

kowntafit 01-30-2004 09:15 PM

3 balls is pretty much standard I think, almost anyone can do it, and if they can't, they can after a little practice (provided they are not complete retards). Anything more is where the skill comes in, it takes more than a little practice.
