So when the first episode of Joanie Loves Chachi aired in Korea, it became the highest rated American program in the history of Korean television because it translated to Joanie loves Penis.

The "Rule of Thumb" originates from Old England.

You could beat your wife with any stick that was smaller or equal to the diameter of your thumb without being prosecuted for battery. Anything larger was a crime.

The term "86'ed" comes from the old west. The wiskey served was mostly 110 + proof. When you got too drunk to tell, they served the lesser quality "86" proof stuff to you, thus you were 86'ed.

In medieval England, pigs were valuble, but cats weren't. Young pigs were sold live at market in a burlap sack. Unscrupulous sellers would put a (worthless), cat in the bag instead and sell it as a suckling pig. If a smart buyer looked in the bag prior to leaving the market then they would "let the cat out of the bag" and find out the truth.

Also, in WWII in the UK, U.S. service men liked to sit in the balcony seats and yell at the movies while throwing popcorn and peanuts at the screen and the other patrons. People would get angry about that. Thus the phrase
"No more comments from the peanut gallery!"

Also in London in the middle ages, the roofs were made from thached straw. There were many stray cats and dogs that would live up inside the thatched roofs, (the buildings were all bunched together), and when there was a very bad storm, with high winds and heavy rains, the strays would be washed out of the thatch and fall to the streets below.....so it would be "raining cats and dogs"

(as you can see, I love the history of words and phrases!)

true, though too bad those cats weren't better at catching rats before the plauge or they may have proven their worth :)

*Americans were the first to use germ warfare. They used it against the Indian Chief Pontiac when they would leave out disease infested clothing and blankets for the Indians.
An add on to this fact is the term "Wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole" originated from this germ warfare campaign. When they told the soldiers to gather up the infected gear the soldiers stated, "We wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole!" - so they were given 11 foot poles.

*The term "Tank" came about when they first introduced them to the front lines during WWI. They were covered with tarps and when the soldiers asked what was under the tarps they were told water tanks (Tanks for short). The name stuck.

*The salute came from Medieval times when Knights would pass each other, they would raise their visors with thier right hands. One reason was to expose their faces and the other was to show that their hands were clear of weapons.
