"Playboy" Obscenity Investigation

sorry for the repost,
but I felt this article needed a more accurate attention-drawing subject line.

Quote:

CULLMAN, Ala. - US District Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan apparently wasn?t kidding when she said that it might be possible that even Playboy, a tame magazine by today?s standards, could still be deemed obscene in the United States. A bookstore in Alabama is currently being accused of selling obscene materials ? Playboy and Playgirl.
:warning :warning :warning

Mr.Fiction 01-20-2004 06:59 PM

The government should not be able to win a case like that in 2004. If they somehow do, Alabama shouldn't be considered part of the U.S. - more like Saudi Arabia.

doober 01-20-2004 06:59 PM

lol
I wonder what she thinks of rob black's movies

:winkwink:

Nismo 01-20-2004 07:00 PM

things like this make me embarassed to be from alabama.

KRL 01-20-2004 07:01 PM

No jury in America would conclude Playboy is obscene. They could prosecute all they want but the jury holds the power and no way would that fly.

without debating IF they could get a jury to convict . .

(I think they could, in some parts of the country, where the bible
holds more sway over the populace than the 1st Amendment)

. . a conviction is irrelevant in this case because they already succeeded.

The book store owner removed Playboy from his shelves,
rather than risk prosecution and an expensive legal battle
that these assholes knew he could not afford.

These religious crusaders, hiding behind the badge of the Justice Dept,
know they can intimidate small biz owners with just the threat of fines/jail-time.

Even if you eventually "win" the case, after months/years of stress
and harrasment, you still end up bankrupt from defending yourself.

The only way to really win is to not vote religious extremists into power.

That is crazy. If playboy is obscene we might as well pack our bags!

Rochard 01-20-2004 09:26 PM

Playboy is not obscene in any way. I'm sure if they came after us we'd fight it tooth and nail!

Roger 01-20-2004 09:27 PM

That's ridiculous, they're even getting Playboy in the Middle-East for God's sake. What in the blue hell is going on in our beloved America?

TheEnforcer 01-20-2004 09:36 PM

That is some truly scary shit. And I believe an obscenity conviction isn't out of the realm of the possibility in that state even on Playboy.

:( :helpme

Rictor 01-20-2004 11:13 PM

Playboy LOVES this kind of publicity.

VirtuMike 01-21-2004 12:32 AM

Ask France for a refund on the Louisiana Purchase.

Wait where the hell did we get Alabama?

Elli 01-21-2004 12:41 AM

"The momentum of freedom in our world is unmistakable - and it is not carried forward by our power alone. We can trust in that greater power Who guides the unfolding of the years. And in all that is to come, we can know that His purposes are just and true.

May God continue to bless the United States of America."

I really don't think he means "freedom", do you?

Pornwolf 01-21-2004 12:45 AM

After the religious madness I saw on the State Of The Union address tonight I believe anything is possible.

I Wonder how much Playboy paid US District Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan for the free publicity.

I doubt it. That's short-term thinking, and ultimately foolish.

What happens to their bottom-line when all the bookstore owners located in conservative states decide it's not worth the risk to sell this product?

What happens when Playboy mails a magazine subscription across state lines to Alabama or wherever else this is considered obscene? Remember obscenity prosecutions must take place in the community in which it offends.

This is ridiculous.

to 'Republicans': can't you find representatives who will be fiscally responsible who are not also facist godfearing freaks?

These laws are local laws and are 100% legit.

There are plenty of other counties in the usa with similar laws.

i.e. no porno , no anal sex, no fellatio , etx etc.

In many counties in the usa , merely browsing GFY is illegal.

How true this is. How sad - people first notice this when it's far TOO LATE. It's called fucking the voters, and now that is fucking OBSCENE. :1orglaugh

USA is starting to anal fistfuck itself, some people not even knowing about it. It's the big apple, the great country of freedom.
Really, who belives in this shit? It's made up by lame, headless presidents.

Just THINK, if the unshaved ugly big Bush gets reeelected... just THINK, how much damage he can afflict to this industry during four more years. :feels-hot

Scary thought, right?

sherbert 01-22-2004 03:13 AM

If a man an woman married in CULLMAN, Alabama.......

If the couple later moves to California....

if they decide to divorce......

Yes, it is ridiculous. I love how you leave out key parts of the story.

This is not a federal case. This has nothing to do with Ashhahahahaha, or Bush.

This is one LOCAL COUNTY district attorney, in a small county of about 14k people, acting here.

Being a district attorney for a small county is not about being fiscally responsible. It is about prosecuting crimes in your county according to local, state, and federal laws.
The people in this county are the ones who voted in this district attorney.
Not the rest of the people in the united states. Not all of the republicans.

Voting turnout on *good* days is about 40% of registered voters. In a county of 14k people, that's 5600 people.

So your problem is with 5600 (at most) people in a small county in Alabama.
Take it to them and stop attempting to bash all republicans with the actions of a few.

And next time try including all of the details. It makes you at least *appear* to not be slanting the story.

Pervypete 01-22-2004 08:24 PM

Shit runs downhill . .

George W. Bush -> John AshCr*ft -> Mary Beth Buchanan -> Len Brooks

That's the chain of authority;
and all share the same fanatical opposition against porn.

To them, this is a holy war.
When the president declares war, he doesn't fire a weapon.
He commands the generals. Then they command the troops.
