Once and for all, best PC games list

None of this online pay-per-month shit like everquest. What games are the best from oh, say the last 5 years or so?

I have on my machine:

dukenukem 3D
Quake II
Fallout (RPG of the year for '98)
Fallout 2
Fallout Tactics
Max Payne
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Jagged Alliance 2 (kind of a sucky game if you ask me)

I'm interested in getting a few new games. tell me what you like and why you like it, even if they're older games. After I buy my next half million hits I'll need something to do while the bling rolls in.

woj 01-20-2004 05:11 PM

warcraft, warcraft II, starcraft were fun...

Good strategy games if you are into that type of stuff. You should be able to find a demo of warcraft somewhere on the web to check it out.

Jman69 01-20-2004 05:29 PM

I love all the games where you build up a base and army and attack the other person.

Warecraft and Starcraft games are fun.
I even had fun back in the day playing 'Red Alert'.

I love counter strike also.

CDSmith 01-20-2004 05:30 PM

No, I've heard of warcraft many times before. I'm definitely interested. I just wanted to hear why YOU liked it. Specifics.

Ask me about any of the Fallout games and I'll have you buying them within minutes.

Sosa 01-20-2004 05:33 PM

Half Life / Counter-Strike Mod for sure.
Still the most played Online game

Its so damn fun I can play it for hours at a time.

CDSmith 01-20-2004 05:41 PM

Oh yeah, I've payed half-life, and "Aliens vs Predator" too... even some network matches of A vs P and Quake which were all fun.

How does one go about getting a HL/counterstrike modded game? I have no clue about that shit.

fuzebox 01-20-2004 05:42 PM

Duke 3D was awesome, I'm still pissed off that the never released Forever...

As for the other best games ever made...

Quake
Quake II
Quake III Arena

... were all I ever needed.

Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed is also a favorite.

All three of those games won PC Magazine's 'game of the year' award, for a reason. I was heavily addicted to Starcraft for a while there, a few years ago.

Now, I only play Desert Combat. It's a mod for Battlefield 1942 (which also happens to be another 'game of the year' winner). There's a bunch of us from here that play each Wednesday night.

:thumbsup

washiez 01-20-2004 05:43 PM

Hitman 2 is an awesome game.

GonePhishing 01-20-2004 05:46 PM

Dig Dug, King's Bounty, King's Quest, Fantazmagoria, Quake, Spy Hunter, Sim City, Civ, EverQuest

Now were getting somehere.

Add Larry 3, Monkey Island part 1 and Hero's Quest 1 (Quest for Glory) to that list.

CDSmith 01-20-2004 05:57 PM

You guys need to say why those games are so good. Honestly, ask me about any of the games I listed and I'll tell you exactly why I like them.

Cmon, tell me why Sim city is a good game.

Tala 01-20-2004 05:58 PM

Call me old skool, but I really am addicted to Diablo II.

Diablo II: LoD was fun until all the hacks started popping up. I admit using the dupe hacks, who could've resisted duping SOJ's?

Counter-strike is so lame these days with the cheats and punk-ass n00bs.

Give me a game that actually has a decent physics engine and takes strategy, and I'll be happy.

BoNgHiTtA 01-20-2004 06:04 PM

Old school? That's hardly old school.

I'd consider oldschool such games as:

Wasteland (My All time favorite)
Bard's Tale 1,2,3
Ultima 3,4,5

Some others that kick ass:

Wizardry 8 (The best "modern" rpg I've ever played)
Fallout 1,2, and Tactics
Galactic Civilizations

What I love about the Fallout games:
I like the role-playing-games to start with... but fallout brings something extra to the table, something undefined. The story setting is awesome for one thing... you're in an underground vault, it is 80 years after a major nuclear war has wiped out the planet, and your vault needs an electronic chip so it can continue to have fresh drinking water. You must go out into the wastes and find a new chip........ and the outside world is brutal. Imagine it... mutated beings, desert raiders, lawless towns.... and you have to talk to people, investigate, even get a job in some cases..... in order to win. Some of the new games on the market take a few hours to play... fallout can take weeks. Fallout 2 is even bigger, with more quests and adventures. Fallout Tactics... not an RPG, but continues the Fallout storyline which I love.

I highly recommend all three Fallout titles. :thumbsup

irishfury 01-20-2004 06:30 PM

Unreal 2003 tour
quest for glory 1-4

Oops. Americas Army 2.0:

http://www.americasarmy.com/

Developed by the U.S. Army but played all over the world! Graphics, Weaponry, and Action is as real as it gets. Best of all, it's FREE!!! FTP into: ftp.nvidia.com to download it. You need a better than average graphics card to play though.

JSA Matt 01-20-2004 06:36 PM

Quake II and Half-Life took up a good portion of my life :glugglug

I'm surprised how many people don't know what AA is. I thought everyone knew about it, and it's brainwashing capabilities.

The Army doesn't force anybody to download it. It's a free game. It's a recruitment tool, yes. Nobody denies that. Brainwashing, hardly. Do you call all advertising mediums "brainwashing tools"? Trying to brainwash webmasters with your sig huh?

TurboTrucker 01-20-2004 07:02 PM

Half Life of course.

Tron 2.0 has good graphics. Game play is decent, a little repetetive. A couple spots are really hard I had to use god mode to get through one of them.

Jedi Knight II Jedi Outcast. Good all around FPS style game.

Monster Truck Madness 2. Good classic game.

CDSmith 01-20-2004 07:05 PM

Further to: Fallout

Some famous characters & voices appear in the fallout games....

Fallout:
Richard Moll ("Bull" from Night Court)
Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver)
Cree Summer (from "It's a different world")
Brad Garrett (Everybody Hates Raymond)

Fallout 2:
Michael Dorn (Worf from star trek)

Fallout Tactics:
Kirkwood Smith (the dad "Red Foreman" on That 70's Show)

And lots more that I recognize but can't place what shows I know them from. I wish I could find a few more games that could become as meaningful to me as Fallout.

evildick 01-20-2004 07:21 PM

Definately try Call of Duty. It's the ultimate single player World War 2 game. Once you get to the opening Russian levels it is simply amazing. Kinda hard to explain, you just have to play it.

Don't bother though unless you have an up to date PC.

Also if you like Fallout, pick up Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 in the bargain bin. They are probably the best PC games in that genre. 100's of hours of gameplay. (big time wasters though)

CDSmith 01-21-2004 10:07 AM

Anyone know anything about this game Halo?....

http://www.microsoft.com/games/halo/

My brother just called to rave about it, but he's a bit of an idiot about things like this.

CDSmith 01-21-2004 10:15 AM

So, we've recommended....

Warcraft 1&2
Starcraft
Desert Combat (is it a good single player too?)
Hitman 2 (need a decent review though)
Vice City
America's Army
King's Quest (need better review)
Jedi Knight 2
Jedi Outcast
Call of Duty *up-to-date pc only (I have a 900 Mhz HP w 256 RAM, WIN ME)
Baldur's Gate 1&2 --- You know, I've never been a huge fan of the whole magic & sorcery shit, but I admit I have been tempted a few times to try these games.

Project-Shadow 01-21-2004 10:19 AM

Quake III Arena
Call Of Duty
Unreal Tournament

Quake II hands down is up there in the top 3 best FPS multiplayer...

i'll tell ya why...

i've played it for roughly 7 years now, (still do), and the amount of techniques / jumps / strategy involved is immense.. .currently, the only map that is really played is q2dm1.. i've never played any other multiplayer FPS that entailed so many techniques / jumps.. its a game that you need to play for several years on end in order to get good at and even think about competing on the level the current (small) community is at..

i've played all the other newer games as well... nothing quite matches it in terms of individual skill... most games now, make you rely on a team which i don't like so much since i'm not in a clan. q2 is fast paced, primarily all about your own skill, and highly competitive.

--and also, since ID software knows quake2 is the best of all 3.. Quake4 is going to be more like quake2, opposed to quake3 or 1. ;)

FiReC 01-21-2004 10:21 AM

quake I team fortress isn't on there? 2fort4 was the best map!

Do those games have a good single player option? I've never been nuts about online team games really.

FiReC 01-21-2004 10:23 AM

oh yea and best MMORPG of all time is Ultima Online, back in the day. The current OSI version blows.

Smiley 01-21-2004 10:48 AM

MOH
NOLF
call of duty
battlefield 1942
half life

basically any good FPS

DrGuile 01-21-2004 10:59 AM

for Old School,

XCOM ( the first one )

Best game ever. It has everything. Of course, doesnt work(well) on modern computers.

Recently, I blew through GTA3 and GTA:Vice City. Mafia also was pretty good in the same genre.

Im playing Neverwinter Nights right now, and that's pretty good if you're into the classic D&D genre.

I have a season of NBA Live2003 which I enjoy, I might pickup Madden2004 later today because Im in a football mood and I only have madden99 right now.

bugout 01-21-2004 11:04 AM

Vice City and Hitman 2 for sure..

Max Payne 2 Sucked!!!!

I finished it in 5 hours!

I loved the first one though :)

arial 01-21-2004 11:06 AM

Weber 01-21-2004 12:33 PM

scoreman 01-21-2004 12:38 PM
