i opened my laptop quite some time ago, and it found a wireless signal as soon as it came out of sleep. been using it ever since. bad idea?

I don't think it's a bad idea, it's not like the person that's providing the connection is any kind of a security expert. They'll never even know. :2 cents:

Hey some of us geeks over here are excited by stumbling upon wireless networks.

mang... that's not nearly as bad as the fraternity house ... we borrowed cable from the church next door for 3 years... until they finally noticed we ordered about 1500 in porn and finally canceled their service...

one problem for those with open networks is you don't know what people will do, can you imagine getting a letter that you've downloaded 1000 songs on Kazaa based on your IP address?

Anyway... I think the US is getting ready to get hardcore anti about this sort of thing. Mostly because what SF has planned for the internet is nothing short of virtual communisim... starting with your internet connectivity :)

Change your boxes hostname to some sort of tame message like JustSurfing-NotSNooping-ThankYou ... although most people would probably freak anyway?

I agree, you'd think so with all the open net-parks they intend to open. Big things coming in the regulation of wireless networks in my opinion.
