JFK,
More than likely it's not just your memory that's slowing things down, if it's an old machine it's a combination of everything. ie. CPU speed, hard drive speed, and memory speed (and the amount of memory). You'll need to look up the specs of your motherboard to find out exactly how much you can put in the machine, because all motherboards are different. The one I'm using now has a max of 4 gigs, and I'm currently using 1 gig. My last machine had a max of 768 megs.

Lickshots 01-20-2004 07:10 AM

right now I'm a 768MB of ram....I plan on maxing it out to 1 gig soon. It makes a hell ouf a difference in the startup and browsing and running mulitple programs at once.

512 does the job perfectly unless you're doing a ton of multi-tasking. You don't need a gig if you're surfing, checking e-mail, opening a Word doc, or even photoshop.

Gigs are for when you're using your PC as a video editing machine and intense apps like that.

For everyday stuff half a gig will keep you smooth sailing.

The Truth Hurts 01-20-2004 07:16 AM

first thing I do after buying a new system... max out the ram.

Running 512 now, but it dosent seem to do the job when the chips are down. We are in the process of cleaning it up and doing some upgrades to it. Thanks for the replies, Any other suggestions to make it into a Hot Rod ??

1 Gig is the current "standard" for a high-end workstation. My newest computer has a gig and I have no complaints.

I have a dell p4 3.06Ghz with a gig of ram. I just upgraded to a USB 2.0 boot drive and it starts up and loads shit about 10 times faster.

It's a nice $300 upgrade..

The most you can install depends on your motherboard and the kind of ram you use . You can normally put 1024 . In my machine I got only 2 ram slot 2x and they work together . So I got basicly 2 gig of ram at 450 mhz but they work together at 900 and that's supposed to give better results (thats what I got explained) .

Just_Dave 01-20-2004 12:26 PM

1.5 gig ram on my desktop
