A controversial US fertility specialist who says he has implanted a cloned embryo into a woman's womb has been condemned as "irresponsible" by scientists.

Dr Panos Zavos gave few details and no evidence, and said it was still too early to tell if the procedure had resulted in pregnancy.

But UK Health Secretary John Reid condemned the attempt to create a cloned human baby as a "gross misuse of genetic science".

Fertility experts said if true, it was an "incredibly risky" step to take, and said Dr Zavos was giving false hope to people desperate to have children.

I'd love that too. Genetically engineer yourself to have no cancer, no alzhemiers, no parkinsons etc etc, and speed the growth of a body up about 1000% until it reaches 20. So it would only take 2 years to grow yourself a body.

We should be able to by now, but because the government still bows to the church, scientific advancement continues at an artifically limited pace.

Conservative religious groups opposed blood transfusions. Then they opposed heart transplants. Now they oppose stem cell research and cloning. The same ignorant attitudes have perpetuated thoughout history, and it's impossible (but infuriating) to guess how many hundreds (thousands?) of years it has set back the progression of life.

It's ironic; you will die, thanks to their belief in "eternal life".

Zavos is from Cyprus and probably closer than anyone to achive human cloning. He seems to have access to big funds and he's facing legal problems all the time. I have heard a speech of him explaining the positive impact of cloning in medical science. Of course there's a negative aspect as well. It's only matter of time. He or some of the many doctors that work on human cloning will finally achive it. There's still hope for 2pac's resurrection after that!

Eventually it will be possible to clone yourself, speed up the growth of your clone, and then do a brain transplant.
