In the case of IP as the network layer, and specifically with Ethernet as the link layer, there are two protocols that aid in this translation of addresses, ARP and RARP. What is the name given to a packet at the transport level? Transport protocols occupy layer 4 of the OSI protocol model. The transport layer sits on top of layer 3 networking services.
