Shopping
Nathans
Pubs

There you go :Graucho

BBWTori 01-18-2004 12:46 AM

you MUST shop Canal Street just for fun.
You can get pretty much anything there cheap.
Just walk anywhere in Manhattan and you'll have a great time people watching

hershie 01-18-2004 12:49 AM

I was there for a few days in Sept. and my best advise to just walk a lot everywhere possible in Manhattan and take transit buses too here and there and just eat/shop/drink all over the island as you find something that looks interesting. Much better experience then going to all the touristy spots only.

I took a vacation to nyc this past November, I love that place. When I can move there, you better believe that's where I'll be. Just go everywhere, I don't even have a favorite spot. :thumbsup

BBWTori 01-18-2004 12:51 AM

OOOOOH and you MUST check out Katz's Deli on Houston Street ( Lower East Side)
You haven't had a sandwich (or Hot Dog for that matter) 'til you've had one at Katz...
ask Meg Ryan
*hugz* and have fun

KRL 01-18-2004 12:53 AM

Watch your wallet. They'll spot you as a tourist in a second and you'll start noticing a lot of people "bumping" into you to lift it.

Ironhorse 01-18-2004 12:54 AM

Fuck NY, come to Chicago instead, you may have to dodge some bullets but the food is worth it :thumbsup and alot less ghosts and zombie muggers

Ahhh yes 10th Street and 2nd Ave...talk about Kosher...
Another GREAT QUIET lesser known Italian place with EXCELLENT and I mean EXCELLENT food is Arturo's on York. My Italian Grandma who doesnt even speak English won't eat Italian food unless she makes it herself or goes to Arturo's.

If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.

You called me last night on the telephone
And I was glad to hear from you 'cause I was all alone
You said, "It's snowing, it's snowing! God, I hate this weather."
Now I walk through blizzards just to get us back together

We met in the springtime at a rock-and-roll show
It was on the Bowery when it was time to go
We kissed on the subway in the middle of the night
I held your hand, you held mine, it was the best night of my life.

'Cause everyone's your friend in New York City
And everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty
The streets are paved with diamonds and there's just so much to see
But the best thing about New York City is you and me

Statue of Liberty, Staten Island Ferry, Co-op City, Katz's and Tiffany's*
Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, The Empire State where Dylan lived**
Coney Island and Times Square, Rockefeller Center
Wish I was there

You wrote me a letter just the other day
Said, "Springtime is coming soon so why don't you come to stay."
I packed my stuff, got on the bus, I can't believe it's true
I'm three days from New York City and I'm three days from you

'Cause everyone's my friend in New York City
And everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty
The streets are paved with diamonds and there's just so much to see
But the best thing about New York City is you and me

'Cause everyone's my friend in New York City
And everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty

But the best thing about New York City is you and me.

yeah and don't do what one of my teacher chaparones did on a school trip in high school and open his map out on the street corner. I got in trouble because I just kept walking until i was across the street and it didn't look like I was with the 'gee those buildings are big' guy. Luckily my dad thought I did the right thing.

I took a subway out to Queens to go to the MOMA; went to the Guggenheim and then walked through Central Park to go to the American Museum of Modern History (is that what its called) on the west side of the park.
I also learned a tip about the TKS booth by the Seaport / Fish Market inear Wall St. that it opens earlier and is less busy then the one in Times Square so went there for a walk my first day to get Broadway tickets before the good ones got grabbed up (saw Rent this time and an off Broadway one).
My best times were the unplanned things like taking a city bus up to/through Washington Heights and experiencing the street scene there or hanging out in a pizza place in Harlem, not rushing from one tourist spot to the other.

New York's alright, New York's alright
New York's alright if you like saxophones
New York's alright if you wanna get pushed in front of the subway
New York's alright if you like tuberculosis
New York's alright if you like art and jazz
New York's alright if you're a homosexual
New york's alright, New York's alright
New York's alright if you like saxophones
New York's alright if you like drunks in your doorway
New York's alright if you wanna freeze to death
New York's alright if you wanna get mugged or murdered

depending on how much american tv like Johnny Carson and SNL that you have watched the NBC studios tour is a good little tour to kill an hour or so. I just like going down on the SNL stage :)
