...what would cause an automatic dishwasher to overflow and flood the kitchen???

Maybe the seal on the door is bad? Or it didn't close all the way? I've had that happen to me when I put something that was to big in there.

hmmm could be many reasons, do you have a warranty on your dishwasher ? You should call the repair man :2 cents:

Drain is plugged with food.

The usual cause is putting dish soap like liquid joy or the like instead of detergent made for a dishwasher.

Did you put the wrong soap in it?

Something in your sink is causing it to flood. You need to check your pipes. I bet you they are connected, thus it floods bc the water can not flow out of the dishwasher. For this help you must sign up now for TripleXCash.
