Hey Canuks, who has a US dollar visa Credit card?
if u got one, who did u get it from? i can only see cibc and royal bank offering this service.. are there any others?
i think it would save me lil money from always switchin my american to canadian to pay for my visa that they changed into canadian from american. enlighten me. |
Yes, bank of montreal also offers this service, i think all banks do, however it is a 6 to 8 week approval process and they will jerk you around with a small limit because you are a Canadian, regardless of what your canadian visa limit is.

I got mine through Royal Bank. They gave me no problems at all.

I have one from TD Canada Trust.

TD Us Visa card is great.....
the only problem with it is that it's not tied into the rest of the TD access system, so you cannot see your transactions/balances online, nor can you pay your bill online. |
I have the Royal Bank Gold US Dollar Visa. It only comes in Gold format so I hope you have enough credit for a gold card (at least $5000/mn US). If not, you can do what I did in the beginning and take a 30 day term deposit as collateral. Took me about 3 days to get it and its a pretty good reward program too and has lots of insurance on all purchases. Costs $60 US/year though.

The TD US$ Advantage card isn't available in Quebec because there's no documentation for it in French. Therefore, we can't legally offer it in Quebec. In my personal opinion, the card isn't worth the trouble.
Unless you do really heavy purchasing in the US with a credit card, a US$ Visa credit card isn't worth the trouble or the cost. Take the Royal Bank US$ Visa for example. It's one of (if not) the best US$ Visa cards in Canada. However, it costs $65 US a year. You also have to qualify for a minimum limit of $5000 US. On the TD US$ Advantage card, you pay $25 US a year. You have to qualify for minimum $2000 US. If you go overlimit, it'll cost you $15 US and if you take a cash advance, it'll cost you 2% of the amount, up to $25 US. If you want my advice, go with this account: http://www.tdcanadatrust.com/usbanking/checking.jsp That's what I'm currently using. It's an American bank account available to Canadians. When I say American bank account, I don't mean Canadian bank account in US funds. You can receive domestic wires from the US and ACH deposits. It'll cost you $6.95 a month but if your balance is more than $2500, the fee is waived. You get unlimited transactions and access to online banking. The great thing is you get a Visa Check card for the account, which works like the Paypal debit card. You can use the card in any Visa ATM to take funds out of your account, or you can also use it to pay anywhere Visa is accepted, online or offline. If you have a TD bank account, you can transfer funds directly to it and get a better rate. Only downside is that they don't have any physical branches. So if you're getting checks, you have to endorse them and mail them to the bank (takes about 3-4 business days). But if you're getting wires or ACH, it's all good. |
You can either use EPASSPORTE or CAPITALONE

BMO has no problem with US mastercards |
i'll have to check out the tdcanadatrust one... but most of the cards i've seen don't offer any rewards programs... :(
but then, not getting screwed 4% on conversions is a pretty nice reward in and of itself.. also, cibc us dollar visa has a limit of $15,000... i'm going to try to get that raised (again)... |

if you have an address outside quebec, you can get the card sent there. |

Also they were offering this card to quebec residents about 4 yrs ago then they stopped, im guessing for the reasons you stated above...pretty lame for their customers if you ask me :2 cents: |
