Fellow perl guru's

Is it possible to store a data structure / object into a mysql BLOB field ? I mean i know the theory using Storable and freeze and thaw. But before i start testing, did someone do this before ?

Thanks,

B.

perl sucks, hehe

in php u can use serialize() to put an object into a string and store it in any db. unserialize() to get it back.

That's right!

Yes. We're currently doing exactly what you've described. Just make sure you're not storing anything in the blob you could conceivably wish to sort on.

Sometimes i agree, but most of the times i fall back on perl or c++ for backend stuff. But you're right php is more useful/faster for frontend programming ...

Thanks,

B.

you can use php for backend as well. you can run it from the command line.
php version 5 is gonna have even more OO features. even if you do an object oriented design for your application, you will be able code it easily with php.

perl is the past, php is the future. 'nuff said. :glugglug

This thead makes me wish that I took Computer Science/Electrical Engineering in college rather than history. :)

I studied arts when I was at uni too :) but the great thing about coding is that you can learn everything from textbooks and online, and if you're a fast learner you can probably do it more quickly than if you did a course.

yea, programming can be learned at home.
but actually Computer Science requires more academic studying.

If u study in a serious Computer Science program in a respectable college, you find that they actually leave out most subjects that people can learn just by themselves. There is a reason why most textbooks are special ordered and you can't find them in Barnes&Noble's.
