Google went from being the best to one of the worst

More than half the time I do searches these days on Google the first 10-20 pages are the same site using a different domain. Google used to kick ass, now they've become another Excite.

boldy 01-08-2004 09:15 AM

which sites ? :Graucho

rooster 01-08-2004 09:19 AM

agreed, they are heading down hill. Money currupts.

Its good though because one of these lesser engines like alltheweb or something need to step up. Google basically has a monopoly and thats not a good thing.

vending_machine 01-08-2004 10:02 AM

Google is completely useless if you intend to search for the website of a hotel you're planning to stay at, if you are looking for your local Les Schwab, etc..

I bet quite a few people on this board are contributing to the downfall of Google. :)

KRL 01-08-2004 10:07 AM

They are too busy playing with their IPO Billions.

Typical of the how companies are born, struggle, become a hit, mature, get fat, rich and then lazy, are then get usurped by a new kid on the block and then its adios time and fade out to pasture.

Nothing new here.

NoCarrier 01-08-2004 10:12 AM

Uh ok? You are saying it's going downhill because I won't see your sites being spammed 20 million times in the top results ?

Google is still relevant and the last cleaning was really needed.

DarkJedi 01-08-2004 10:12 AM

there are still a lot of money to be made with them :)

dd2 01-08-2004 10:16 AM

I've noticed a lot more doorway pages being at the top results for specified keywords.
Mainly since the big shakeup last year.

cheekycherry 01-08-2004 10:36 AM

Google HAS gone to shit... But I still search there because all the others are still SHITTER.

Funny you should mention this, I was doing some searching yesterday and damn if the first couple of pages weren't all filled up with different domains all popping the exact same page.

I usually just skip right away to like page 5 or something for more relevant results.

superweb 01-08-2004 10:56 AM

Absolutely agree. Google is going to fall down in next few years, if they won't do something with their algorythm.

Ash@phpFX 01-08-2004 11:05 AM

if you dont like them then dont use them.

otherwise stop complaining about free traffic

haha so true:D

EscortBiz 01-08-2004 11:15 AM

it doesnt matter what they do people will figure out a way to put in many pages on top.

Its not just porn, try searching for designer stuff, fitness stuff or anything.

Their is one solution that not only would help but would be fair, and that is put the paying advertisers like normal listings.

Tons of surfers ignore those paid spots.

smproduction 01-08-2004 11:19 AM

Maybe Google service is not good as before, but it is always the best search engine for now

I agree 100% - What the hell is going on? It goes against everything Google is supposed to be!

loverboy 01-08-2004 11:23 AM

google has been owned by thousands of advertisers. goodluick in your search.

skitten 01-08-2004 11:25 AM

Did anyone notice the blatant mention of Google on the season premier of "Sex and the City" Sunday night? I wonder how much they shelled out for that?

pradaboy 01-08-2004 11:27 AM

no matter what, Google is still #1 and they are making millions with it!

Roger 01-08-2004 11:28 AM

Yep, can't even search for porn on Google nowadays, either they have something completely off-topic or it's the same guy with the same website getting all the ranks on the first page. I like http://www.vivisimo.com

brothenberg 01-08-2004 11:47 AM

FYI...

YAHOO! Just dropped google from being their search engine... they just released that recently..

In jest, all of the results are paid results... what about the little guys, what about the ACTUAL results, not just paid keywords...

I'm curious to see what yahoo will cook up..

it better be catchy as everyone knows how to google now a days..

GonePhishing 01-08-2004 11:50 AM

Agreed... Google really has shit ass SERPS now. I wonder if Yahoo will be primed to beat them down. The only thing I am not so fond of is the thought of MSN becoming the leader.

I doubt they paid for it, they still claim they don't put an money towards advertising....and "googling" is a pretty common word nowadays...

brothenberg 01-08-2004 12:04 PM

I've never even seen a google commercial on tv...

but than gain, I have a DirecTivo.. :-)

Kingfish 01-08-2004 12:12 PM

I agree google is a shitty spam hole anymore. However, there really isn?t anything on the horizon to replace them. Every time a new startup comes along that shows a little promise they are quickly purchased by a big player and put on the permeant back burner. The only other thing I see brewing is Microsoft?s current effort to create their own search technology instead of buying other peoples stuff. It will be interesting to see their final product.

Nothing new here.

Look what happened to AltaVista. Biggest in the world, being greedy and turned against the webmasters. Sunk like a stone.

The webmasters have a lot of influence, I do think their power is underestimated.

I definately wouldn't under estimate them, owning the software that comes installed on every computer has its advantages.

I think they will have their search engine technology wrapped up pretty tight in the Longhorn version when released. Then the anti-trust suits will start and by the time things are settled they will have the market lead already anyway.

SexxxyChat-T 01-08-2004 12:56 PM

teoma.com

Best engine out there right now.

If you can get your sites up to the top on Google, then its a great source of free traffic, but since November, Google results have really turned up shit. I have noticed I am not able to find half the stuff I search for now, and just end up using Teoma because they'll give me what I'm looking for, or help me find it.

And who knows about Yahoo, I hope they don't go pure Inktomi again, damn PFI engines always suck ass.

.. I am sorry, muachahahahha !!

liquidmoe 01-08-2004 01:40 PM

I've only really used google for really specific searches and it's always been great but after their big whooptie-do update searches that used to complete easily with the proper results on the main page have gone to shit. And these are all non-porn related queries. They need to get their act together quick for sure.

Oh yeah, I uh.. work the Directv.... so I have all the DirectTv channels, and I modified my Dtivo..

So I have free Directv, free tivo, and I modified my Dtivo for all the hacks..

One thing I recommend everyone doing is the 30second skip button..

After a while you learn the pattern for shows and you can go through shows very fast..

for Instance every seinfeld episode is edited he exact same way

30sec intro
30sec-1mn Previeew to show
1mns (or two clicks) of commercials
8 mns of airtime
7mns of commercials
and so on..

you'll memorize the patterns and fly through average shows you watch.. than I use the 5sec back button to go back...
