Why don't member areas have ads?

I know it's pretty obvious but how come if someone buys a porno mag they get 40% porn and the rest ads and articles. :2 cents:

How come pay sites never follow this system?

I know "people don't want to see ads" and they can switch but would it that much adding ads?

I think ads are great in a members area providing you don't over do it.
We us them in some members area and make extra revenue as the surfers just keep on buying....

TonyL 01-07-2004 11:06 PM

Yes you should definetly use ads in your members area. If you don't you are losing extra potential revenue. Most of the larger programs do have upsell ads in there members area.

Speaking of great non-competitive members area ads.
can't beat $50 a sale:

Do you care more about making a quick buck off your members or having them retain for 10 months?

I understand that but how come pay sites never incorporated them like magazines? I'm guessing b/c magazines are a few time use product? Whereas a web site updates.

BiggleJones 01-07-2004 11:11 PM

I think that free cam feeds and video feeds (ie 247Live & pornication) pretty much act as a sites ads. I think that like HBO and other movie channels, if a person is paying for your service, you should try to keep them happy and not annoy them. I dont think 1 or 2 ads would really piss people off though.

quiet 01-07-2004 11:14 PM

I know many do...but I'm talking about the % that magazines do vs. web sites.

websites are more profitable then magazines.

a magazine sells for $10 for 1 month and is quite costly to make.
a website membership is usually $20-$40 a month and cheap to make.

if you cram ads in the face of your paid members the same way a magazine does, they'll chargeback or cancel right away.

lower your membership fee to $5 or $10 and you can probably get away with more ads.

twistyneck 01-07-2004 11:24 PM

If I trusted sponsors, I wouldn't have my own paysites. And since I don't trust them, I sure as hell don't send my highly valued members to them.

SoundMan 01-07-2004 11:28 PM

I have 4 or so NON-MIS-LEADING ads in my members area.
the members are paying CC users so upsells are possible.
just dont piss em-off as rebils will go down...

i only sell a couple of non-adult products. i'd never send them to another paysite.

porno mags make most of their money off of ad space, where we make the most of our money off the membership fee

smack 01-08-2004 01:23 AM

i would be iffy about sending my members to another site. kind of a "the grass is always greener on the other side" poin of view. what if you were to upsell you own sites inside member areas?

DVTimes 01-08-2004 01:28 AM

Magazines make most of there cash from advertising.

People are happy with adds in magazines, and some may even buy a magazine for the adverts, i.e., I buy a PC mag to see what PC bits I can buy, rather than the articles. Some buy a porn mag for the contact numbers (i.e. phone sex lines). So they have a place in magazines.

On websites, people are after content. Add adverts to your members area, and I myself would feel very unhappy about paying a fee to see it, if I see adds. OK, a banner or two is ok, but I paid for content not adverts. I would suspect more adverts you place, the less time members will stay.

Plus, these days many people suspect (I do) that some adverts have horrid code in them that places junk on your PC. Each day I am using AD software to remove junk that has some how got on my PC.

smproduction 01-08-2004 03:56 AM

They are annoying for the members, but if you offer interesting ads(same niche for example) then they will be also productive

V_RocKs 01-08-2004 04:41 AM

Why doesn't the interior side of your cars windshield have ads?

Darren 01-08-2004 04:58 AM

Ok do not spout theories in this thread if u have not got experience with doing both.

Our retention rate with adverts is just as good with adverts, just put them in associated places or setup special discounts for your members.

Your losing a lot of money if you do not do this, www.mensniche.com is of course a great upsell we upsell to all our sites in every member area.

i would just like to point out that it probably does, cars come with manuals which usually show other models of cars, also come with details on where to get serviced from eg their dealers... stickers are usually on a car saying "ford & then location purchased from"

Landrovers usually have covers on the spare wheel on the back again advertising the actual dealership you purchase from... tax discs usually have "breakdown service number" or similiar on the back...

Fuck ur entire car is a drivable advertisement with the brand name on it!!

oh and lets not forget how they usually all have free clubs they sign you up to and send you details of new models and their top insurance companies etc etc
