Why does notepad do this?

I use notepad as my HTML editor. When I click save it removes all the spaces and bunches the HTML up to the top. I have never had this problem before tonight.

Does anybody know what the problem can be?

And no it has nothing to do with the Word warp option.

budz 01-07-2004 01:25 AM

did you download the file off of your server/site to edit?

I think that causes it.. not sure.. edit it in dreamweaver.

alan-l 01-07-2004 01:49 AM

pure evil.

j/k, sometimes it happens the same to me, and now that you mention it, I'm quite sure it's when the file has been downloaded :(

kenny 01-07-2004 01:51 AM

I did download the script from my server.

I already had the script edited and uploaded using a alternative editor.

I was just tryin to figure out what the problem could be.

Must be a bug.

change your ftp settings to ascii for that file

kenny 01-07-2004 01:58 AM

It was set on ASCII. I upload files 1000 times a day I know that wasnt the problem:winkwink:

iwantchixx 01-07-2004 02:02 AM

use textpad :)

kenny 01-07-2004 02:06 AM

I really dont want to switch from notepad. I grown use to it.

I am constantly uploading/downloading files when I tweek a webpage running server side scripts.

There has to be a logical reason for this, But it beats the hell out of me.:winkwink:

also im only partly joking. i had this problem years ago with a server and i could fix the file sometimes by trying uploading/downloading with binary and/or ascii. have no idea what caused the problem tho.... but you totally reminded me of it with this post.

Thanks I will try that.

The file appears normal after I download it from the server. After I edit it and click save..

As soon as I click save it bunches up to the top. Almost like the "save" button is acting as the bunch HTML to the top button.

yeah exact same problem lol. god i HATED that.

and it was wierd. if i didnt catch the problem immediately and re-download it, and then reuploaded before i caught the mistake..it was too late to fix it by the method i just said. at that point i had to manually fix it.

it really is an obscure problem. thats why i totally remembered it when he mentioned the symptoms.

also if im not mistaken, its not just notepad. the file itself is corrupted somehow. i believe he will have the same problem if he tries wordpad for example.

Vitasoy 01-07-2004 02:23 AM

I can't say I have experienced that problem before.

If you like notepad then you will LOVE textpad. I used to use notepad several years ago, and once I tried textpad I never looked back.

Just trust on this one. Try it. There will be no more "scrunching" bullshit, or BS of any kind from then on.

smproduction 01-07-2004 02:41 AM

Yes textpad is a lot better :2 cents:

Ash@phpFX 01-07-2004 02:44 AM

i have never had this problem, and i do all my html and php in notepad

why is textpad better? i have never used it. what features are different?

kenny 01-07-2004 03:00 AM

I downloaded text pad and set it as my HTML editor. It resolved the HTML smashing problem.
Has alot more tools.

Makes cutting and pasting easier. Letters are color coded. Besides that I dont see much difference.

I am just glad I can edit and upload this fucking file:)

GonePhishing 01-07-2004 03:03 AM

text pad :thumbsup I like using it too!

Rorschach 01-07-2004 03:32 AM

Real men use Vim.

slapass 01-07-2004 04:23 AM

Awesome I have the same damn problem so text pad here I come.

Maru 01-07-2004 05:40 AM

Another nice, free text editor: Note Tab from www.notetab.com.

One of the most used programs on my PC.
