What are compaq laptops likes?

I had my laptop stolen and the insurance company are replacing it with a compaq presarrio. Has anybody got one? Are they any good?

Broda 01-06-2004 06:30 PM

Stay clear of Compaq laptops.. my uncle has one.. broke down 6 times.. sucks bad! And repairman even said it was common for them to break down now and again!

Get a Dell or a HP.. IBM maybe, but they suck a bit too - motherboard problems.

GonePhishing 01-06-2004 06:41 PM

Stay away from Compaq all together.

What kind of laptop did you have before? They won't give you the same or just give you money equal the value? I hear Compaq blows.

there like not as good as Dell :thumbsup

The old compaq's were really shitty... But now HP owns them and I think that they are better..

I have an old compaq and it has lasted about 6 years... It has been dropped and had tea dumped on it, and then my parrot found the keys tasty, so she ate all of them off... But it still runs. It has become a little unstable lately, but damn Anything would...

You can always refuse the compaq and tell them wither a different brand or the cash...

THanks guys for the input.

I had a centris before, never had a problem with it, although it was only 6 months old when it got stolen.

The insurance lady said that they no longer have that model and the closest in specs to it is the compaq presarrio. I can refuse it I gues but I'm not sure what happens then.

Only problems I had with mine was the sound quit working and the battery would last about 40 minutes.

OzMan 01-06-2004 07:21 PM

I have had two for ~ 3 months no probs :glugglug

Compaq and HP are now the same laptops. I just got a compaq presario x1000 and its great.

I will never buy a HP or Compaq, we see way to many of them in for repairs. I would go with a Sager for first choice, then a Dell.

evildick 01-06-2004 07:50 PM

I bought one a few years ago. Admittedly, I have hardly used it, but I recently dusted it off to set up a wireless network. The battery is buggered after 3 years, not sure if that is normal or not. (It won't hold a charge.)

Not many problems otherwise, other than one burned out pixel, but I would definately not recommend it. I know there are a lot better products out there. Like Dell, Toshiba, or Alienware if you really wanted to blow your wad.

Compaq is really bad, brake down a lot, especially in a humid regions. Shooting in Thailand for Belgian version of Survivor: some Compaqs broke down after 6 minutes, dells, HP, IBM, Apple went down too, ACER didn't.

Buy a ACER, they seem to be the best and most stable

compaq/hp are budget line machines, and have a very "best-buyish" feel, kinda like some of the sony's and a _few_ of the toshibas (there are some nice toshibas out there tho).

i used to have a presario 1200, it was a celeron 533 i think. it wasn't a stellar performer, but it did what i needed it to do. it didn't break on me, but we had a couple others that did.

my bitch was the support at the time (compaq was still compaq). it had winme, and i wanted xp on it. i called compaq, and they told me there was no way they'd allow me to put xp on it (you needed to buy the more expensive ones for that). i finally got everything running using some crazy-ass drivers from other laptops, but it was a bitch.

at the time, hp was vastly contrasted in they fully supported their equipment with drivers for about every os, so i'm sure there's no problem like that now.

they're cheap, intended for the generic consumer. more demanding users would be happier with the quality and durability of an ibm or dell, i'm sure. but, they get the job done.

xxxoutsourcing 01-06-2004 10:22 PM

we use dell and the Toshiba Satellite's which fucking rock
:thumbsup

TDJ 01-06-2004 10:27 PM

Dell!

Toshiba are nice too... but dell's service rocks all ass.

pradaboy 01-06-2004 10:31 PM

my obvious favorite is the PowerBook but I guess that's no option for you... you might try the Dell, they're good but Compaz sux ass
