Just curious, how accurate is BETTERBEUP from Choker?

Was just looking at

http://www.betterbeup.com/

And I noticed that some hosts had serious downtimes according to betterbeup. But I didn't see any posts on GFY about this..

Was that because YOUR sites were up at those hosts, so this means betterbeup is not very accurate, or?

Since it monitors the site directly i think its very accurate. Unless Chokers site would go down ofcourse :)

I wouldn't trust it for a second.. people are biased. What would it take for a host to offer Choker a couple bucks to make them look good? :2 cents:

... and how you can determine a HOSTS downtime by a particular SITE is beyond me.

i see rackshack on there as an example, they're unmanaged servers and hence downtime is a reflection of a particular persons server skills, rather than rackshack themselves (although rackshack could occasionaly go down). could be the same with other hosts too.

Also when CANDID goes down, Chokers page won't count anymore. This means when candid goes down, betterbeup, won't see this, meaning candid will always have 0% downtime...Or am i wrong here?

I am sure the script will take its own downtime into account. :1orglaugh

there's a degree of inaccuracy if it's monitoring from only one network and that it doesn't report a host as 'down' when ALL sites it monitors are down at the same time. The downtime of some guy's server on a host is irrelevant.

I am not going to sell my soul for a few bucks. I am not going to jiggle any numbers to make any host look good or bad. If a host wants to buy banner spots that appear on the page then of course they can. This system is very accurate so far. The talk of being more accurate if this were on two networks does not apply as bbs does not ping sites like other services. It uses a different method. When there are many more accounts the numbers will average out to show a pretty accurate summation of the hosts. We are making changes on the fly as this is a beta system. So far beta testing is going very smooth.

It's Webair numbers are incorrect. I use http://www.redalert.com to monitor our servers with them. I haven't received a downtime notice in months. I have redalert making multiple checks to our servers every 5 minutes from multiple redundant locations and it's 100% for months.

Here is a screen shot of the redalert report for the last 3 months. Our server is the blue line. The red line is all redalert accounts average across the board.

Get the script on multiple servers so you have some type of redundancy then it should become more reliable. I would love to use a server monitor made specifically for the adult industry red alert is very expensive.

My :2 cents:

betterbeup only monitors servers that guys install the plugin on, not every one of a hosts servers. A server at webair that is using betterbeup was unreachable. That is why it shows downtime. It could have been unreachable for a number of reasons, but whatever the problem was it was on that servers end. The main purpose of betterbeup is to help you monitor your own sites, not the entire host. Guys are trying this service out in large numbers. When a host has say 20 servers being monitored, then the numbers will average out to give a good representaion of that hosts uptime. The hosts uptime only reflects that hosts servers that are being monitored.

sigh.....there is no need for multiple servers because of the way we set this system up. If over 20% of the servers do not respond, the script is told to ignore the unreachable servers and assume a router problem has occured. And Candid has improved their network so much the chance of my server not being able to reach others is very slim. You are welcome to try this on your domains and provide input and suggestions for improvements. I am open to all suggestions EXCEPT getting more servers. This is a free service, I only get a banner spot for it. I had this coded for my own sites. Since I have a dedicated server just to monitor my other servers, it would be stupid of me not to make use of this service and let others use it also since the monitoring server is practically idle if it only monitors my servers.
