downside of using WMV vs AVI?

Alright. I just noticed that I can convert a 5 meg AVI to a 299 KB
WMV without much loss of quality. My funnyshit videos are eating
about 100 gigs a day and I need a way to bring it down a bit
(they're all avi).

I have completely no experience with this video shit, am I missing
something or is this WMV shit really magic in compressing these
videos? is there a down side?

thanks!
:thumbsup

You just discover wmv files??

Luc 01-05-2004 11:25 AM

right. i never did video over the web, and for downloading i
mostly did Divx mpeg shit. i can't believe how well compressed
this is, only makes me wonder if there is a down side, say
server load, etc.

wmv is very lame for porn...

:2 cents:

the downside is that people want mpeg

Using MPEG or WMV, MOV or RAM is like you asking what is the best comp system, MAC, WIN, LINUX?

Fact is, that AVI is the most worst compression you can use. WMV could be used by about 98% of all users withou installing any new player, plugin or something else and it's just 1/5 of the MPEG File size if you will compare the results.
So, WMV is a pretty good idea to go for.

AVI isn't a type of compression, but rather a file type.

Something like a Huffy YUV can be an AVI file that is gigantic. (Think GB/min)

I just wanted to clear up the 'fact' about avi being the 'most worst compression'... Kind of like saying that aluminum can is the best tasting soda.

Using wmv9, you alienate all mac users and pc users with win98 non-se/win95. But we have a second video option along with wmv to keep those people satisfied.

I made this cartoon originally in raw avi. It was about 500mb.

Encoded in wmv down to about 1.4mb with minimum pixel fragments.

STOP using WMV!!!!

WMV3 uses built in RM(rights management) and the files don't play properly in many players on non XP systems, and people who use other players than WMP9(which blows anyways)...

animated .gif is ALWAYS the way to go. :2 cents:

Mac users can view wmv9 with Media Player for OS X?

Yeah but is that only when you encode in 9? What about when you encode in 8?

I like wmv more and more everyday

basschick 01-05-2004 04:32 PM

we have a fair amount of members who can't see wmv's. those that can like them, but for the others, use mpg.

VeriSexy 01-05-2004 04:55 PM

WMV blows! :feels-hot

WMV is windows format....so that leaves out the 5% MAC fucktards and 3% Unix 3|33+ crew

Every newspaper, graphics company, design company, etc.. they are all fucktards now? they are still paying clients...

Many mac users feeling the same way dont use WMV for OSX, they use VLC or other ones, and like I said becuase of DRM you cant open the files...

Danny_C 01-05-2004 05:02 PM

97% of users can view v9, and the other 3% just need to download a player... no big deal... it's a small percentage. That percentage is worth the money you'll save in bandwidth... and only a percentage of that percentage will complain about having to download a player.
