The agony associated with dialup

Man...this is painful! My family and I are currently in transition from Florida to our new home in North Carolina and the corporate housing here doesn't have hi-speed Internet. I was downloading at 2Mbit at home and now I have a hefty (NOT!) 49333 dialup connection. I can't surf, I can't work, I can't remember why I clicked the last link! lol

Is ANYONE here using dialup? If so, WHY?!?

Rorschach 01-05-2004 06:18 AM

I feel your pain brother... I'm moving soon and I'll have to spend a week or so on dialup while they connect the ADSL at the new place, not looking forward to it. :(

DarkJedi 01-05-2004 06:22 AM

I've been using dialup for the last years now.

Probably this is another reason why the dialer businees is almost dead ...

With every click the theme from the gameshow Jeopardy echos through my melon. It's making me a tad bit nutty.

Welcome to my life. Why? Because I can't get anything else.

I admit I haven't looked into satellite yet. Sounds like it might be more trouble that it is worth though. Also sounds like we should get high speed in this area sometime this year, so I'm not going to blow money on satellite internet now.

Dial-Up sucks but I keep it as a backup because DSL usually goes out at least once a month when they service the network.

Its like going back to the stone ages.

Dialup is bearable if you have some good ad blocking.. but I wouldnt try and get any work done on it.

5 megabit cable is much better. :)

When I visit my parents and using their computer I just can't imagine using dialup ever again!!

I moved a couple of months ago and had to use dial up for 5 weeks. Got my bill last week. 550 euros. Thats like 750 US.

I feel your pain...I only do that when on road trips, but still a miserable situation...

The last time I used a dialup connection(years ago I think) I promised it was the last one, it is too stressing, I'm sure it is not healtly, so it is better to be offline if you havent a fast connection :2 cents:

i was on dialup until 2 years ago. the DSL provider Northtel started to offer 128k DSL to my house, so i paid 250 setup and had it installed, then they went out of business 2 months later. Thank god my cable provider started to offer cable internet a month after that.

DeadFidel 01-05-2004 12:45 PM

I just moved from Miami to New York, and all the DSL services said 10 business days, that means 2 weeks (Fuck That).
I then called Optimum on line cable, went to pick up the hardware and I was up in 5 hours.

When I travel I need to use the hotel lines and my lap. I cannot do work, just read mail, stats, that's it.
