The domain speculating market was falling apart around the time NetSol/Verisign bought Great Domains - early 2000? Since then it's been mostly dead.

Same with Afternic. They got bought by Register.com for some outrageous amount of money, then Register abandoned the site once they realized there were no big money domain buyers. Eventually they sold it for pennies on the dollar.
