What's the BEST Overclocking Utility ?
 

Ok now, I'm COMPLETELY stupid when it comes to overclocking. I've never tried it before nor really figured out how to do it. I did look at a couple of pages, but nothing really clicked in my head, ha ha ha. I have decent hardware that I can overclock, so I figure that I'll give it a try. I have 2 512-meg sticks of PC2700 Kingston Hyper-x ram and an Athlon 2800 Barton CPU.

Any info on the best way to do it, either by program utility or other means would be greatly appreciated :)

Well, I have the Hyper-x ram which has the built in heat sinks on it which will of course keep it cooler to let me overclock it more :)

As far as the software goes, I've seen a few utilities that claim that they're used for overclocking.

Like i say, I'm totally stupid in this category. Maybe this was the wrong board to ask, ha ha ha.

Overclocking will heat up your CPU not your ram :)

well there is software forinsance i got a gigabyte mobo and it uses a utility i canoverclock my cpu and then clock it back normal its called easytune 4 and so doe sthta make someone a idiot? there is softwares to make it eas for people who do not want to fuck up in the bios :winkwink: and i do belive he may be mistaken cause you can overclock all parts thats why they make heatsink setups with fans for ram maybe you shoudl look into thigns soemtimes yourself

IF YOU OVERCLOCK YOUR RAM YOU CAN BET IT WILL CONSUME MORE ENERGY AND THEREFORE GENERATE MORE HEAT.

I looked on the bios, but I don't see anything that'd let me overclock it. I have an ASrock K7S8X. I see that the newest generation of the board boasts the overclocking tools, but I guess that maybe I got left out with my board.

RAM is very important (although more so in P4 systems) because its bus speed will limit the amount you over clock.

My PC3200 runs @ 400mhz (2.5) and 333mhz (2.0).

If i increase my FSB, i have to enable a divider, which reduces my RAM speed.

PC2700 with an Athlon 2800 seems a bit of a missmatch? (would have thought you would have wanted faster ram than that).

Although because the AMD chips operate differently to P4s, the ram speed is not as important because you wont reach clocks speeds that will fubar it.

Higher quality ram will run the highest FSB settings while still allowing you to keep a 1:1 ratio on your mem.

This is why people will spend 2-3 times as much for a stick of high performance low latency ram vs generic ram.


The best overclocking deal right now is using a P4 2.4c chip - you can get them to 3.6ghz with normal air/fan cooling fairly easily.

OR TRY FLASHING YOUR BOARD'S BIOS TO SEE IF THE UPDATE INCLUDES OVERCLOCKING FEATURES..

try 2.20a or 2.21 if you want a tool look for something like easytune III

As far as my bios goes, I believe that I currently have like 1.2 rite now. I see over on my motherboard's website, they have version 2.2 rite now, so perhaps I'll give that a try and see what happens.

Also, when you start overclocking more than your system can handle Windows can become unstable.

yes KRL, but if you have a proper cooling unit you can O/C and keep everything stable :glugglug
