best dedicated hosting and some questions
 

well ive always ran on virtual reseller accounts to manage all my domains however my gfs mom is soon looking to get dedicated hsoting t start her online business and at that time ill be bale to throw my sites on her dedicated server to help manage some things for her is there anything different with it or is it all pretty much done the same and who is best for dedicated server best tech support best free addons 24/email and good phone support icq/aim/msn/yahoo support as well so if somehting happens can get results thank you for the input folks :)

wow the bargain basement for dedicated hosting:Graucho anyways im making notes t all replies here and will contact as i get her full details im trying to find her agood deal but at same time good service i got fucked in the past by quit a few host offering something the could not provide when i just recenetly moved to my newest host from other i cancled my credit card so they woudlnt rebill i sent them 2 emails way before billing date but did cancle as precation and sure enough on the 1st he emaile dme asking me why i left he had givin me excelent support but the dow time had killed me i think on day i was down 14 hrs another 11 another 7 all in 2 weeks i had just spent numerous hrs submitting site to engines etc so i moved the new host im woith is ok but i dont think id buy their dedicated service so i will for sure be getting in touch with the ones here and finding the best one for her/my needs thnk you all for your replies :)

There are basically 2 types of dedicated servers -- those that cost close to $100/month and those that cost more :)

The one's for $100/month are usually offered by companies like servermatrix.com, EV1(rackshack), and others. These servers usually come with limited support and expect you to have the technical knowledge to support the software and applications running on the server. They'll usually handle any hardware issues but say you need help reconfiguring apache for hotlinking protection your on your own.

The other type is a fully managed dedicated server where they setup your email/DNS/www/ftp and whatever else you may need to run your business. These companies usually provide 24/7 responsive and knowledgeable support, the only way to differentiate them is by figuring out a. how fast they can satisfy your request if its time sensitive and b. how stable their network/servers are

In response to your question, there is quite a difference between running a virtual account and a dedicated server.

There are basically 2 approaches here as well.

A: You get a control panel installed on your dedicated server, this isn't always the best option as usually the underlying software isn't optimized for maximum performance, however unless your running a 1,000,000 hits/day site this really shouldn't affect you. The control panel generally replaces technical support as everything is graphical and easy to use.

B: You get a managed dedicated server where you have root access and can setup everything to your hearts content, as well as have the host provide you with technical support. This is usually the best option for beginners to moderate users.

C: You can get an unmanaged dedicated server where the full responsibility lies upon you to make sure everything is setup properly. If you misconfigure your email and lose 10 important contacts, there's no one to blame. Make sure you know what your doing or are ready to invest some serious time into learning Unix before getting one of these.

ok well i will want a fully managed dedicated server then so i have full support as i can be a fuck up :winkwink: i really dont want to cost her any downtime due to soemhting i can not have right fast enough so 24/7 support on a mnaged dedictaed will be what i want so if ayone who says they can offer me good prices wants to rretract their above post feel free to do s if not ill contact all who have replied here i really prefer if someone posts it be the owner or worker that does so and can make the deal :)
