January 3, 2004 -- STUNNED "American Idol" champ Kelly Clarkson abruptly left the set of "World Idol" New Years' night after fans snubbed her in favor of a gap-toothed plumber from Norway.
Clarkson, who had been favored to win the competition, appeared dazed by the loss and did not stick around to congratulate Kurt Nilsen, 24, the good-natured father of two who won.

Clarkson placed second.

"We didn't get to talk. I think she went back to her hotel I guess," Nilsen told The Post yesterday.

The talk of the "Idol" world yesterday was how upset Clarkson appeared on the show, which was taped Thursday afternoon in London and broadcast through various time zones across the world.

She appeared to grow increasingly disgruntled as the votes from different regions were tallied and it became clear she was losing to an otherwise-unknown singer from a small Scandinavian country.

Nilsen is a fan of Clarkson. He traveled all the way to New York from Norway last year to hear her sing at Giant Stadium.



It was his first trip to the U.S.

Kurt, too, seemed surprised he could not find her after the show.

"Everybody wanted to talk to me and take pictures," he said. "I didn't get a chance to say goodbye."

What was clear was that winning the first annual showdown of "Idol" winners from around the world will change the young man's life dramatically.

His single is being a released this week in England and discussions are underway to see if it will get a U.S. release.

"We have to now take the next couple of weeks to have meetings," says his manager Jan Fredrik.

If his record is released here, Nilsen will have to deal again with the idea that he doesn't have the classic good looks of a pop music idol.

Despite his new, relative wealth, Kurt says he will not have his teeth fixed to remove what has become his trademark - a wide space between his front teeth. "I'm really happy the way I am because if I changed my look I think people would think that I had [sold out]," Nilsen said.

Nilsen returned to Norway yesterday after spending New Year's day in a London studio were the holiday show was

filmed.

He was greeted at the airport in the seaside city of Bergen, by thousands of hysterical fans, a marching band the city's mayor and other assorted dignitaries. He later was congratulated via phone by Norway's Prime Minister.

It was Nilsen's strong performance of U2's hit "Beautiful Day" in a "World Idol" special that aired on Christmas Day that left "Idol" judges and millions of viewers from around the world star-struck and ultimately helped him snare the title of "World Idol."

The show aired in more than 22 countries and was seen by millions of viewers.

Clarksons expressions were priceless, what a bitch.

BTW that Norwegian only got bad comments on his looks, Kelly got also bad comments on her singing and let's face it, she's the 100th R&B singer around, nothing special at all. Only that Simon guy said that she was the best and he's not an opinion anyone should listen to.

If anything she shouldn't have even been in the competition, she isn't the latest american idol winner - she's had a full year on most of the other contestants getting out there with the US music industry machine pushing her - she would have had many, many, more fans in other countries than any other contestant, whereas most others were known only to their native countries through the show.

she got bad reviews by the judges - she plainly wasn't that good on the day, kurt nilsen just picked the right song and sung it really well.

The Norwegian winner clearly deserved to win it.. 10 or whatever the hell it was countries can't be wrong. If they truly hated US or whatever your lame excuse is they would not have voted her 2nd, almost every single country did. What this was planned? International conspiracy!!!

I think her attitude says it all - that's why she didn't win, and Nilsen's parting comment "I didn't even get to say goodbye" says a lot for the guy. I hope he goes far.

It's about time another country got 15 minutes of fame in the musical world again. The U.S. has been hogging the limelight for a while now, and I daresay they will again - and most likely deservedly so.

I dunno why they begrudge another country having a few moments in the spotlight.

She didn't win because she wasn't the best performer that night. I actually do like her music, but Kurt was amazing that night. He sings like a real man, his voice is deep ,sexy, and husky, and he has great range, tone, and stage presence. Kurt has a lot of charisma on stage and a sparkle in his eyes when he sings! And boy can he sing...

Damn, if he sang like that to me every night I would marry him and have his babies!!! He is actually sexy when he sings and his performance left me breathless! He is my cute little hobbit!

I downloaded some of his Norwegian idol songs on-line and it's really good. You should hear him sing U2's "Stuck In A Moment", he sounds better than Bono! And he also has some songs with his band Fenrik Lane. The Norwegians should be really proud of Kurt, he is awesome, one of the best male singers I've heard!

I do like Kelly but sometimes she does trills or oversings too much. Kurt just sings STRAIGHT with no trills or frills and it sounds PERFECT.

I also like the Australian Idol Guy Sebastian. I downloaded him singing Beyonce 's Crazy In Love :1orglaugh in the Australian Idols. He's pretty good too. Germans should be embarassed of themselves, Alexander Klaws singin Maniac was horrendous!

Never did like the British guy Will. Can't see what's so interesting about him. But I love Kurt! Kurt needs to release his album in the U.S.

Also, who cares if Kurt is not "conventionally" good looking? Clay Aiken is fugly as hell, and he outsold Kelly when he released his album. Kurt
will do fine, talent shows have proven that the audience doesn't want a manufactured star with "popstar looks", who can't sing. Talent always prevails.

lol i actually watch this show and thought it was interesting reading these stories on the net because they seem to be part gossip.

i have seen different video clips of world idol on the net, did you know the show was edited for each country and other pretaped stuff was thrown in to, like the elton john performance? so the show wasn't shown as is to each country, they pick and chose judges comments, etc.

I have to say i'm happy Kirk won though, i have NO idea why somebody's looks should determine their success in singing business.. there are enough pretty faces around in movies and on the catwalk for visual stimulae - when it comes to singing it should be all about the voice. Just baffles me that people think otherwise.

I know people that didnt vote for her just because shes american...an american will NEVER win a contest like this I promise you. I'm not american nor do I really care I just think thats the reason...do you really think that guy was the best singer on the show??

Yes, I did think Kurt was the best singer on the show... actually one of the best singers I've ever heard. He had the best range and controlled his voice better than any of the other contestants. He doesn't trill or oversing, he makes it seem so effortless. And he's got great stage presence, that combined with his voice makes him a real star.

Besides, he's not ugly. He's quite sexy when he sings, I love that deep husky voice. He sings like a real man. I think he's sexy when he sings!

And he needs the win more than Kelly. This will give him the exposure he needs in order to conquer the euro market, outside of Norway and in the U.S
Kurt's win was even more remarkable , because Kelly has her PR and publicity people pushing her hard internationally, while Kurt doesn't.

He was the best singer of the day, undeniably.

If we dont see him around its because of bad marketing.. because he certainly has what it takes to be every bit as successful as u2 and other people he did covers of.


Kelly is very talented.. but she didn't win because she WASN"T the best on the day, nothing to do with her nationality.
