CNN: mission to mars

that's pretty impressive shit.

Most amazing thing is: how is a device able to communicate
with earth over such a distance.

Must be fake.

The Truth Hurts 01-03-2004 09:42 PM

yeah.. just like the moon landing...

also.. didn't we already do this a couple years ago?

Ya and movie directors are commenting that the production is quit poor and low budget like!

lol

tranmitting a uhf signal from a small device over 300 million+ miles
in a few minutes is pretty amazing.

sumphatpimp 01-03-2004 10:12 PM

yes you are right but it can be done.

as a kid I was into Ham Radio and the ham op's did have a satellite.

took some doinf but I diid get into it and heard myself get into it.
for real.

radio sigs travel at 360,000 miles per second or something like that.

yeah I know hard to believe.

how about your internet connection? how fast is that?

exactly but the idea of "a radio signal at 360.000 miles per second" is difficult to imagine.

Unlike a signal tranmitted by wire a radio signal is very abstract
and although humans (like you) understand how things work
i think its impossible for the human brain to really grasp the process behind it.

Puzzles me.. but then again: i have trouble hitting the 'post reply' button

:winkwink:

Cool :thumbsup

flashfire 01-04-2004 02:16 AM

very interesting

KRL 01-04-2004 02:17 AM

Space is a vacuum so there is zero friction. The electrons of the transmitters can flow perfectly.

To be precise electromagnetic signals in space travel at 299,791 Kilometers per second.

KRL 01-04-2004 02:22 AM

The distance between Earth and Mars on landing day was about 170 million kilometers. Takes about 9 minutes 46 seconds for the radio and video signals to travel that distance each way.

Trax 01-04-2004 04:54 AM

i find that kind of stuff amazinly interestinf

I love how the thread is called 'Cnn Mission to Mars' .. hehe, shouldn't it be the Nasa Mission to Mars?

http://marsrovers.nasa.gov/home/index.html

check it out here..

this is pretty bloody amazing, so far this has been an absolutely amazing month for NASA, and we are only a few days into it..

Elvis is not dead
I'm sure about this !

A friend of mine who talked to another friend saw him.

:helpme

Fabien 01-04-2004 08:25 AM

Of course it's possible.

It's amazing that people making cash over the internet don't beleive this or don't understand this (radio waves).

Amazing................

liquidmoe 01-04-2004 08:57 AM

It's frightening when people dont know that the speed of light in a vacuum is only 186,000 miles per second, so if you got your radio signals transmitted at 360,000 miles per second, I think the government, NASA, telecommunications firms, and just about a ton of other people would be interested in your research. :Graucho

No it's not frightening. sumphatpimp said "360,000 miles per second or something like that"

Go ask 100 people right now and how many would know the speed of light? Probably 5. They would be those who actually took and remember their high school physics, Science proffessionals and Space nerds.

Well done NASA. More pics :)

Vitasoy 01-04-2004 08:11 PM

Now lets find some aliens :Graucho

Doesn't it take like 30mins for data sent from Mars to reach Earth?

ChewbaCreative 01-04-2004 08:29 PM

they did it

budz 01-04-2004 08:39 PM

great thread..

I was wondering about the signal transmission

but was too lazy to look.. :)

9 Minutes 46 seconds to be precise (each way of travel time).

Amazing.. you don't happen to know the error rate that occurs when sending transmissions from Mars? I'd imagine it would be pretty damn high!
