What are the best LCD monitors out there?

I might buy one soon but don't have any idea who makes the best out there? You guys have any recommendations? Good or bad experiences with any LCD monitors?

thanks

polish_aristocrat 01-03-2004 05:46 PM

I bought a Samsung Synchamaster 191T LCD after reading recommendations from other GFY'ers. So far, so good :Graucho , definitely better than my old, small CTR.
But I think there's already a newer version of it.

Get the 17" Envision EN-7100

Best value around at under $400 and the display is simply outstanding and flawless!

Samsung 191T PLUS ... I'll be buying another one shortly, great product. You can't go wrong with Samsung, Sony or NEC for LCDs.

I looked at lots of monitors. Some were twice as expensive, but this one had the best picture quality of any of them.

Envision is the 2nd largest monitor manufacturer in the world and makes monitors for other brands as well.

I swear when you have this baby tweaked and at 1280 X 1024 images look like you've got a studio quality 8 x 10 print on your screen. Its that good and crystal clear with absolutely perfect color, saturation, brightness and contrast.

I've had monitors 3 times the cost of this one that don't come close to it.

How much tweaking did you have to do to get it looking nice?

Vitasoy 01-04-2004 12:15 AM

Sony, Nanao, Viewsonic, NEC.

Its not that they aren't great monitors. But this new one I got has the best image quality I've ever seen, especially at that price point. Samsung was my 2nd choice, but at twice the price and side by side this Envision looked just as good and actually had a brighter picture.

Just get a high end video card, push the frequency as high as you can go, run it at 1280 x 1024 and get some DisplayMate screen calibration images to tweak the brightness, contrast, white / black points and colors.

That 21" Samsung is nice. Picture is perfect. But I personally don't like a screen that large. A 17" LCD is equal to a 19" CRT in terms of screen size and that one is just right to me.

Cuzma 01-04-2004 01:53 AM

I`m working on 19" FlexScan L767 and the picture is really awesome.
http://www.eizo.com/products/lcd/l767/images/photo.jpg

Specs here: http://www.eizo.com/products/lcd/l767/index.asp

Friend of mine told me that EIZO makes the best LCD monitors out there. Another friend bought some SAMSUG and had 3 bad pixels.

Yet Eizo is nice. I have a Nanao CRT which is the name they used before they switched to Eizo.

It depends, some CRT monitor flicker more than others, at certain frequencies, or have flickering interactions with fluorescent lighting, which causes eyeaches/headaches in some people. LCD displays generally don't have that issue...the pixels are on continuously, not briefly activated in quick succession and repeatedly refreshed as they are on a CRT.

KRL 01-04-2004 04:21 AM

Once you go LCD you'll never go back to CRT. The quality of flat panels is great now.

Is it true that they are not as good for video games? I heard that and why wondering why! :)

BigFish 01-04-2004 08:56 AM

viewsonic

quantum-x 01-04-2004 09:05 AM

A few things after reading this post

#1 - Fuck dell, go samsung. Dell LCDs are Samsung LCDs, with a nice markup.

#2 - The 'not good for games' is referring to response time, which can result in smearing if you get a crap LCD, like a BenQ.
<25 is good, <16 is great.

#3 - I posted a similar threada month back, and looked around. The best you can do is a samsung, and i'd recommend the 193T. I'd actually recommend 2. Cheaper than 24" single, and you get 36" of rotatable, 1280x1024 DVI / VGA glory.

mM.

This is also my recommendation, get it here

AWC 01-04-2004 09:32 AM

envision looks clunky...

the bezel of the Samsung's is ultra thin... about 3/4"

and they pivot...

could run my 19" at 1280 X 1024 OR 1024 X 1280

I have two Samsung's... no dead pixels on either... they send their seconds to off brands like Dell
