thousands die..

Sadly, racing greyhounds are the "waste product" of the greyhound racing industry. Each year, thousands of young greyhounds who do not display potential to make money are disposed of at greyhound breeding and training farms. In addition, each week at tracks around the country, truckloads of failed or injured racers are sent to be killed at veterinary offices, animal shelters, research labs, and destinations unknown. Contrary to industry propaganda, the majority of greyhounds are not adopted out as pets each year. So long as large-scale dog racing exists, thousands of dogs will continue to be produced and destroyed.

About 10 years ago I went to the greyhound track in Colorado Springs...all I saw was a bunch of sad looking creatures penned up in cages too small for them only to be let out and run for a few brief minutes.

After that I did a bit of investigation and learned a lot about these dogs that before I had never really found all that beautiful.

What I learned was how hard their lives were, and how they were also one of the best family pets you could ever get your hands on....I now think they are one of the most elegant breeds out there and if I didn't have my mutt that I've had for going on 10 years I would adopt one in a heartbeat.

This is no different from anything you would see in the back room at your local Humane Society.
