'Once you have a business community that is so corrupt in a society whose business is business, then what you have is, indeed, despotism. It is the sort of authoritarian rule that the Bush people have given us. The USA PATRIOT Act is as despotic as anything Hitler came up with ? even using much of the same language. In one of my earlier books, Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace, I show how the language used by the Clinton people to frighten Americans into going after terrorists like Timothy McVeigh ? how their rights were going to be suspended only for a brief time ? was precisely the language used by Hitler after the Reichstag fire.'

READ.

Lets not forget pariot act II: the new breed.

That was signed into law quietly the day of saddams capture.

OOOOOPSSS!!!.... I didnt see that constitution sitting there and I spilled my coffee all over it..... WOOOPSY.... I was cleaning it and it tore apart, better throw it out.

ThunderBalls 01-02-2004 09:57 PM

Q. Speaking of elections, is George W. Bush going to be re-elected next year?

A. No. At least if there is a fair election, an election that is not electronic. That would be dangerous. We don't want an election without a paper trail. The makers of the voting machines say no one can look inside of them, because they would reveal trade secrets. What secrets? Isn't their job to count votes? Or do they get secret messages from Mars? Is the cure for cancer inside the machines? I mean, come on. And all three owners of the companies who make these machines are donors to the Bush administration. Is this not corruption?

Pleasurepays 01-02-2004 09:58 PM

Gore Vidal is certainly a well balanced and objective person to be commenting on Conservative politics.

what did you think he would say? he is anti government and half communist.

I have read not only the first PATRIOT Act but also the second one, which has not yet been totally made public nor approved by Congress and to which there is already great resistance. An American citizen can be fingered as a terrorist, and with what proof? No proof. All you need is the word of the attorney general or maybe the president himself. You can then be locked up without access to a lawyer, and then tried by military tribunal and even executed. Or, in a brand-new wrinkle, you can be exiled, stripped of your citizenship and packed off to another place not even organized as a country ? like Tierra del Fuego or some rock in the Pacific. All of this is in the USA PATRIOT Act. The Founding Fathers would have found this to be despotism in spades. And they would have hanged anybody who tried to get this through the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. Hanged.

So if George W. Bush or John Ashhahahahaha had been around in the early days of the republic, they would have been indicted and then hanged by the Founders?

No. It would have been better and worse. [Laughs] Bush and Ashhahahahaha would have been considered so disreputable as to not belong in this country at all. They might be invited to go down to Bolivia or Paraguay and take part in the military administration of some Spanish colony, where they would feel so much more at home. They would not be called Americans ? most Americans would not think of them as citizens.

Do you not think of Bush and Ashhahahahaha as Americans?

I think of them as an alien army. They have managed to take over everything, and quite in the open. We have a deranged president. We have despotism. We have no due process.

i like reading his stuff.

he has been one of my favorites since my first week in college, my teacher was glad to introduce us to his work in english class from the very start. and i am thankful, even now reading this interview today...

geez that was a decade ago now.

he has been published since 1946, try reading some of his stuff sometime.

Great article. He's right, as soon as the Muslims get their Saladin, they will unleash the smackdown on our candy asses. We are really fucking up right now more than we realize. Gore puts it in perspective.

The Truth Hurts 01-02-2004 10:57 PM

no need for electronic ballots..
dems will eat each other alive before the election gets close..
Bush won't even have to campaign..

Fletch XXX 01-02-2004 10:59 PM

also, he has ran for congress, and his family has a history most american families do not. coming from a line of a senator and other political figures, id say he knows a thing or two, and is more than capable of shaping an opinion on things, hell EVERY american is entitled to this form of expression.

'Vidal's grandfather, Thomas P. Gore, was a popular (and populist) senator from Oklahoma - the state's first senator, and the Senate's first blind member. He served from 1907-1920 and again from 1931-37, losing in '36 because of his opposition to the popular FDR. As a child, the young Vidal would often accompany his grandfather to the floor of the Senate, occasionally being permitted to sit in the chair reserved for the vice president.'

http://www.pitt.edu/~kloman/politics.html

instead of being held over an alligator mouth, he was on the floor of the senate as a child....

you said he has no political credibility.

you were wrong, side step and avoid all you want.

i like his non-political stuff like myra brekenridge. that book is hilarious

i also like his screenplay for caligula (even though he later wanted his name off the movie credits, there is still quite a bit of his genius in the script).

Eletronic voting = Bush wins.

There will be no more missing ballot boxes, hanging chads, recounts or too-close elections.

Considering the situation with the developers of the software & the fact that it is not open source, with technical committees (computer geeks) from all sides able to evaluate the system - then there is no democracy.

When the software company that makes the voting software goes balistic when even a operation manuals get published, let alone opt'ing for a open source voting system AND they are strong supporters of one candidate - then its going to be rigged. Period.

Why shouldn't our voting system be open source?

Well over half of the internet is ran by open source software (the secure half I might add -- as MS products get you owned.)

And I guarantee that if the voting platform was open source, every coder in the world is going to come out of the woodwork to audit it & make suggestions to make it more secure.

Hell, the people should be explained the above and allowed to vote (the old way) on what type of voting system they would like -- open source, or private voting systems created and maintained by republicans.

If it were democrats that were creating the voting system like this the republicans would be having a shit fit.

But no... can't have that. That will fuck up the master plan.

Exactly, do they not realize the companies that make the electronic ballots donate to BUSH campaigns?

if that isnt bullshit, what is?

Im going to try and get more info on this though, id like to know more about who these ballot machine makers are, and how much exactly, do they donate to Bush.

Yea I don't get it. I'm sure some of these people want the republicans to stay in power so bad that they actually like the idea, and others are just so naive they refuse to believe anyone would be so corrupt.

How do you think the current war in Iraq is going to play out?

I think we will go down the tubes right with it. With each action Bush ever more enrages the Muslims. And there are a billion of them. And sooner or later they will have a Saladin who will pull them together, and they will come after us. And it won't be pretty.
