Anybody's living in Thailand? What is a normal rent for a nice apartment/house close to the beach :-) ? What kind of internet connections are available?

it's pretty cheap...hotels cost $17 CAN a day...and that's 3-4 star...it depends also on what beach u want to stay on..:thumbsup

I heard its very cheap to live there but I dont think you can get high speed access.

You can get DSL all over Thailand now with TA or TOT.
256/128 are the standard package which will cost you about 3000Baht a month unlimited access.

Ive been to Thailand about 15 times and its cheap as hotel....appartments, hotels, whatever...few 100 bucks a month and you live like a king...1000 spending money is more than you need.

I asked about this as well on GFY a few months ago. Definitely seems to have a crapload of advantages from what I've heard. Only thing that really keeps me from moving there is that porn is illegal over there, and I don't really trust their law enforcement.

Why you not go to
Laos , Vietnam , or something like that ?

i paid 2$ bribe for a seatbelt ticket 4 days ago....

they can be bribed for anything... even murder.... but that will run you at least 800$..... cocaine possession will run you around $25.... marijuana posession $25... no helmet on your yamaha R-1 $2... etc

get caught shooting porn, i'd guess around $100

I love Thailand, been there so many times. Everytime i come there i stay like 3/4 Weeks. I go this year again :)

they have major drug problems out here with meth running rampant (i dont mind, it keeps the girls skinny).... they have corruption in the government and police, they last think they are gonna do is see who is FTPing porn... im not even sure if there is a way to monitor who is FTPing porn.... lord knows no country in the world has the resources to monitor who is frequently VISITING porn websites...

From my point of view the 2am curfew ruined Bangkok. As did the crazy war on drugs. Personally getting locked down in a club and having to piss in a cup with another 500 party goers while some random thai cop stares you out isn't really my idea of fun.

its going down to 1am as soon as Thaksin signs the bill....

either way i party till 6am at the underground after hours bars/clubs/cafes.....

ive never gotten the piss test raid before.... just lucky i guess.... actually im told they chilled out on that... the police colonel that had a hardon for that in bkk has been transferred out of bangkok i heard....

close to the beach ? you want Pattaya... rent can cost from $150 a month to $4000 a month... depends on how you wanna 'ball'....

as far as cost of living... i have a friend who gets a whopping $1500 a month fixed income from his pizza place in boston and he is considered a white-hobo he has to live so cheaply.... then again he spends alot on whores and drinking every day... so clothes and his pad and places to eat get pushed aside for the 'more important' things....

in the eyes of the thai people any white man is 'rich'.... if you make more than $150 a month they think you're rich... but if you're from a 1st world country, you better be making decent cashflow if you think you're gonna get the same amenities you had in your old country as they generally cost the same if you are upper-crusting it..... 5 star dinners tend to cost almost the same as in the usa... same with 5 star hotels, trendy nightclubs, high priced hookers.... automobiles cost 30-50% more here, especially high end Benzes etc....

What happens if you get caught positive in a piss test raid? Can you bribe your way out or is it off to the cells?

I guess it really depends on the cop at the time. When I was there for Sonkran (thai new years) when the war on drugs was probably at its peak. It was actually very scary to watch the news nightly where they would actually show drug dealers blown away by the cops, these are not censored images like we get in western society these are pictures of people with bullets through them and there heads half missing. Very disturbing for the 6 o'clock news.

I guess we were just unlucky, we got piss tested at Ministry and then on the way home got pulled over, searched again, they even ripped the back seat out looking for shit.

I stay at the dynasty in NaNa then I move on down to phuket on patong beach.... then off to PhiPhi.... thats where I spend most of my time

Man, those magazines they sell are crazy...pics of suicides, murders...anything goes as long as its bloody.

Ive been wanting to go there and stay for a month or more but how do you handle your money? I would think carrying thousands in cash would make you suspect if searched.

you can rent nice villas in phuket at 5 minutes bike ride from the beach from 10 000 baht ( 254$)

i m staying in bangkok and i rent my two bedroom appartment for 15 000 baht . the condo has 2 swimming pools, sauna, jaccuzi, a tennis court and a gym. 5 minutes walk from the skytrain...

i heard there are still some other appartments for rent here at 17 000 baht ...

I wouldn't mind visiting but I'd definitely need a tour guide.

yes, a culture shock, and a very pleasant one.

in bangkok you can rent an apartment for for $200/month that would cost $3000/month in San Francisco.

and you can walk around in the poorest parts of town without fear for your life, and people will be laughing and having a good time.

if foreigners could easily buy property there, i would live there.

and there are no more beautiful women in all the world than thai women---and not just physical beauty, spiritual beauty.

if you love women, it is shangri-la.

just to explore... and i like cheap whores.... when i was a Marine I was in Asia and like it... Asian people are great.... nice.... etc.... plus im even more bigger than asian men than i am american men, so nobody fucks with me at clubs.... only been in 2 fights since i got here... in the usa i'd be brawling every weekend at least once...

I had a trip planned and then 9/11 happened so I ended up cancelling it. I still want to go to Thailand. I've always wanted to go to Asia and where better to go than where the girls love you long time. ;)

its all relative..... me, personally id go to pattaya and pay 2500 a month for rent and i'd be happy... the beer and food is great.... if you dont have much money you could get good rent 300$

theres more whores per capita in the beachtown of pattaya than anyhwere in the world.... the main strip is right on the beach,, and so are all the beer bars with whores etc...
