Is The Term 'Eurotrash' Offensive To Europeans?

i was just wondering.

Theo 01-01-2004 04:10 AM

no

reynold 01-01-2004 04:11 AM

YES

Mutt 01-01-2004 04:12 AM

Like if I was to say 'Hey Klaus you Eurotrash what's your email address?' - would Klaus find that insulting?

Mutt 01-01-2004 04:13 AM

oh brother - one yes and one no - MAKE UP YOUR MINDS!!!

Rob 01-01-2004 04:15 AM

Who gives a rat's ass?

Is Yankees offensive to Americans? You think they give a fuck if it is?!?! I have no problems with Europeans (except the French, those pussies) but calling us Yanks is just going too far.

:thefinger

Odin88 01-01-2004 04:21 AM

I am not European, but I can't see how refering to people as trash can be seen as a good thing. Even if you don't really think they are trash, I don't think the intentions behind the word are really friendly ones.

Rob 01-01-2004 04:25 AM

Did you piss someone off by calling them Euro Trash? If he/she is your friend then it's a term of endearment...if it's someone you don't know - then he/she should have bitch slapped the skin off your cheek. Friends insult with care, strangers insult with malice.

That's just how shit works around here. :2 cents:

funkmaster 01-01-2004 04:27 AM

no, just don't mention the war.

Good point.

Roald 01-01-2004 04:28 AM

Nah not if it is said by an american :winkwink:

digi 01-01-2004 04:33 AM

No, especially when it comes from some flag waving american.

Paul Markham 01-01-2004 04:37 AM

The first time it really got noticed was on a Frech TV program and we did not take offense.

You have to remember we are more confident about who we are and what we achieved than some people. It's those with l;ittle confidence that have to keep defending themselves.

Anyway we take it as a joke unless it's used in spite.

Mutt 01-01-2004 04:38 AM

so if it's said by a flag waving American a European would take it as a term of endearment, a compliment.

:helpme

Libertine 01-01-2004 04:46 AM

It just confirms what we already think about Americans. :glugglug

I really think it's all about the context in how you use it. :2 cents:

I think nobody will really care about: Eurotrash

jas1552 01-01-2004 05:05 AM

I think it's probably to broad a term to be offensive.

How do you figure? That's like saying the N-word is too broad of a term to be offensive. I think EURO is pretty cut and dry, IMHO.

chemicaleyes 01-01-2004 05:17 AM

Really depends on how you say it & who you say it to.

El Pres 01-01-2004 05:18 AM

When an Australian calls you a sepo do you find that offensive?

Eurotrash.
There used to be a program on British TV hosted by a couple of French blokes.
heres a link

Finding stupid stuff/people from around Europe, fucking funny program.

Is the term "White Trash" offensive to Americans?

I'm watching "Tne Jerk" right now...

I think White trash is a term aimed at trashy people, not White people as a whole. From what I have seen in movies, etc, Eurotrash seems to be a somewhat derogatory term used to describe Europeans as a whole.

There are so many european countries, cultures, and languages I don't see how anyone could take such a term seriously and thus be offended by it. I'm not european though so what the hell do I know?

And there is only one African country, tribe or culture? I think the broader a derogatory term is, the more offensive it is - isn't it? I mean would it not be more offensive to refer to a non-White as a subhuman than to refer to a Black as a ******?

Wouldn't you be simply steteotyping over a greater population - and thus arguably being more ignorant? I am not some hippie, but by todays standards this seems to be what would make the most sense?

Naw, I think they're just too sensative if that offends them. Going back to that whole, "Sticks and Stones...blah blah blah" mantra. If any word offends a person then they have rice paper skin. Now if you called him EuroTrash and followed it up with a hefty right to the chin, then I'm sure he would be offended, a little. :1orglaugh

Technically yeah i guess. The history of the word ****** is probably what makes it so offensive. Eurotrash doesn't have that history. I could see thinking poorly of a person who would say eurotrash and being offended at the persons overall attitude, but not the word itself unless the european has a very thin skin. It seems like it would be about as offensive as the word cracker. Not very.

No - that just wonderful.

(Of course, that also implies that we're allowed to use the word "Jewish trash" about Mutt and the other Jews on GFY.)

flashfreak 01-01-2004 06:03 AM

this is stupid... I don't care about the expression history, who'd like to be called trash? YES it is offensive...

Lee 01-01-2004 07:16 AM

I dont think its offensive & I enjoyed the program on Channel4 :)

Anton was kind of cute though I bet he really has a cockney accent.

pornanza 01-01-2004 07:52 AM

no, it isn't especially offensive.

although as with anything else, it's not what you say, it's how you say it

ryan

ronbotx 01-01-2004 08:46 AM

I prefer "EuroScum" and could care less whether it is considered offensive or not...

Troels 01-01-2004 09:14 AM

European countries are too different to be labeled under one term. Take Albania and Norway. Not exactly identical twins.

So no, I don't think it's offensive to most Europeans, especially not if it's coming from North Americans.

Neither would you be if I said Canaduh to a Canadian, or ignorant fat fuck to an American.

rebel23 01-01-2004 09:57 AM

naah, not offensive because there is no "european" identity like there is an "american" identity because of different languages and different cultures so if you want to insult "europeans" you have to be more specific, i.e french frog or whatever
