Popular Indianapolis radio personality Adam Ritz was arrested Tuesday after his family's 22-year-old baby sitter told police he sexually assaulted her.

Ritz, a WRZX-FM (103.3) radio disc jockey, was taken into custody by Marion County Sheriff's Department sex crimes investigators. Authorities said he faces preliminary charges of criminal confinement, rape and sexual battery.

Ritz, in handcuffs, declined to answer a reporter's questions as investigators walked him from their offices to a waiting Sheriff's Department car that took him to jail Tuesday.

He was released Tuesday night on $10,000 bond.

The Sheriff's Department said the arrest stems from a sexual assault complaint by a woman who baby-sits Ritz's children at his home.

The complaint states that the assault occurred in his home in the 200 block of Pine Drive on Dec. 12, and that the woman reported the incident Dec. 15.

"We have some evidence, but I don't want to get into that part. It still has to be screened by the prosecutor's office," said Lt. Phil Burton, a spokesman for the Sheriff's Department.

The Indianapolis Star does not disclose the names of sexual assault victims.

Ritz, 33, is one of the most recognized radio personalities in the city. He is on the air during evening drive time, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Calls to his station, known to listeners as X103, were not immediately returned.

Officials at Clear Channel Communications, the station's owner, said Tuesday they could not comment because they were unaware of details of the charges and arrest.

Family members of the woman who filed the complaint did not immediately return a telephone call.

It's unclear how the arrest will affect an upcoming New Year's Eve engagement Ritz was scheduled to host tonight at Peppers in Broad Ripple.

A profile of Ritz in The Star in September 2001 noted his clever use of commercial parodies and his ability to relate to his mostly 18- to 34-year-old audience. He grew up in Carmel and was an all-state tight end on the Carmel High School football team.

Besides his radio work, Ritz has an Internet site that features photos taken with celebrities and TV personalities.

A police report in the case says the assault occurred after Ritz returned home around 3 a.m. Dec. 12. The woman was baby-sitting while he was away, and the mother of the children, who was not identified, was out of town.

The report says the woman was sleeping in bed when he held her down and sexually assaulted her.

Later that day, she went to a medical clinic, which contacted the Indianapolis Police Department victims' assistance unit, which took her to Methodist Hospital for testing. The woman said she reported the incident to "clear her mind."
