Ephedra Banned

Today the dietary supplement ephedra, an herb which has often been used for weight loss, was banned by the FDA. I do not personally endorse the use (or non-use) of ephedra. However, I am SICK and TIRED of our government constantly taking away our rights and freedoms in the name of 'the consumer's best interest' when it suits their political interest to do so. They claim that 155 deaths are more than enough reason to justify the ban. If that is the case, then when can we expect the ban on tobacco products, which kill THOUSANDS more than that EVERY SINGLE DAY? That ban isn't coming any time soon. Why? Because big tobacco has millions to spend on lobbying efforts. The dietary supplement industry, on the other hand, does not. By banning ephedra, the FDA can make it look like the government actually gives a FUCK about its citizens when in truth it only cares about the almighty dollar.

I agree. Crystal Meth gives a much better high :2 cents:

TheJimmy 12-30-2003 01:56 PM

another example of our tax payer dollars being wasted...

it's the ABUSE not USE of ephedra that gets people into shit...

and if we're going to go down the 'ban shit that gets abused' road...then the top of that list better be cigarettes & supersize fatburgers at McDs & BK

that shit costs us WAY more on a national health level than a fucking herb that's been 'used' wisely by Traditional Chinese Medicine for a few weeks <insert sarcastic tone here>

Ephedra usually works best when stacked with other things, like caffiene. It is also more effective when used as directed, i.e., ingested in proper amounts and used in combination with diet and exercise. No diet supplement will be very effective if you sit on your ass all day and stuff yourself with Big Macs.

I COMPLETELY agree with you on this. The 'quarter pounder with cheese' has probably killed many more people than ephedra.

The Truth Hurts 12-30-2003 02:04 PM

I took something with Ephedra in it once.. one pill, a Stacker2.

Though I was going to die.

Nasty D 12-30-2003 02:09 PM

Tried ephedra energy shots a concert, it was way to wiggy didn't like it.:glugglug

Yeah, I tried that for a week and it really fucks up your heart rate. Not good at all. Now, if I need extra energy I just drink extra coffee.

Why would they ban tobacco when they make billions of dollars a year in taxes from that? What would they tax if they didn't have that? I certainly wouldn't look forward to being taxed more to compensate for it

MetaformX 12-30-2003 04:45 PM

pretty much every company that puts out a ephedra product knew this ban was coming, and they started putting out products witout ephedra. Nevertheless, ephedra/caffeine/asprin stack was very effective at weight loss, just too many side effects

uhmm... do you know what ephedra is? what did you think would happen?

digifan 12-30-2003 06:36 PM

According to AP it will be banned early next year only.. and I'll miss it, having extremely low blood pressure it helped me a lot, taken by moderation of course, 2x60 mg per day, not 3x400, that is nonsense.

Ma Huang

The Chinese have used this herb for over 5,000 years, particularly to treat asthma and reduce upper respiratory infections. The primary active ingredient of Ma Huang is ephedra. Both ephedrine and ephedra stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, causing vasoconstriction of the blood vessels in the lining of the nose. They also dilate the bronchial tubes and stimulates the heart. Benefits body building and endurance athletes by promoting themogenesis (the burning of fat).

Ancient Chinese physicians prescribed this herb for asthma, hay fever, nasal and chest congestion. Known for the sense of well being reported by its users. This herb tea has been used by health tonic, a natural stimulant and an appetite suppressant.

The ECA Stack is great.

I am currently using it right now and have great results with it.

I guess I will have to order it from out of the country when the ban comes in place.

digifan 12-30-2003 07:07 PM

You can get it in the Netherlands.. do a google search.

The ban will be appealed and probably lifted before it even takes affect.

In 1996, aspirin ranked eighth among all drugs as a cause of overdose and poisoning.

In 2001 there were 120 deaths attributed to Tylenol..

KRL 12-30-2003 09:28 PM

Only 155 people dead out of 12 Million users.

The automobile industry would be thrilled with numbers that low.

:1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

pradaboy 12-30-2003 10:37 PM

I used it in proper dosage along with caffeine (I took Stacker 3 & 4)

it really depends on the consumer, some ppl are just more sensitive to some stuff than others. I really had to quite using it otherwise I'd pass out.

there are a lot of alternatives tho that have been proven to be safe

cluck 12-30-2003 10:42 PM

Amphetamines are probably safer than ephedra but they're banned.

The new thing will be pseudoephedrine. If they schedule that there'll be no sudafed or any other congestion medicine.

As for kava kava, I don't get them banning that. It's as safe as anything and fun as shit to abuse. It's caused deaths in europe but that's because they use the actual plant. In the USA we use the root and haven't had a liver problem yet. Fucking idiots in the DEA.

Swanks 12-31-2003 12:02 AM

Yea they havent banned it officially yet. Im gonna stock up on it as i enjoy taking them when i work.. Methampetamine just doesnt do it for me. :Graucho

Pseudroephredine gives some nice energy but taking alot of that will damage your esophagus and worse. I know firsthand and now deal with constant acid reflux issues. Ive been burping uncontrollably the past 3 weeks.. Need to see a doctor soon.

Mr.Fiction 12-31-2003 12:16 AM

If there is one thing the U.S. government does well, it's overreact.

JDog 12-31-2003 12:20 AM

I believe the Nitro2Go's have that in it! I was just about addicted to them, just because I wanted to stay up longer and longer! 2 years ago I was up the WHOLE month of feburary! :(

Vitasoy 12-31-2003 01:01 AM

It may be banned but if you search hard enough, i'm sure you'll find some :Graucho

of course pseudoephedrine is a precursor for crystal meth..which causes law makers to balance the risk that people just get it for manufacture (that has happened in New Zealand).. Pseudoephedrine is ok as a decongestant but there are alternatives.

hrm and aspirin for weight loss?? htf does that work.

fuzebox 12-31-2003 05:04 PM

Ephedra was banned in Canada in a couple of years ago...
