Earthquakes are lethal if you have substandard construction and it hits when everyone is asleep.

That's a lot of people. Probably better to be dead over there. The emotional and mental trauma to the few survivors will be devastating for years.

I still have nightmares from the huge quake I was in ten years ago in California. Still feel that jolt and get cold sweats thinking about it.

A place where I was doing video editing that week got completely crushed cause it was right around the corner from the epicenter. Had the quake hit in the daytime when I was in that video bay I would be dead.

jesus that's alot of dead people. Guess they need to start building things to withstand earthquakes over there. From what I heard on the news that they do not build to code there and the Iran Government was getting a bunch of shit over it.

That's really sad! Can't even Related to that kind of devastation at that scale!

true, and we are really fortunate.

With all their oil wealth, how can they keep those people with houses that fall at every earthquake? In Iran, people always die in their tens of thousands at earthquakes, because the fuckers running the country spend the oil revenue for military purposes ...

My old man told me he woke up mid-air over his bed, while watching some bookcases fall over during the Northridge one....

being a native of the SF Valley for a few decades you come to expect them every 10-15 years...a good sized one that is...

the people that live in 3rd or 2nd world countries that have almost zero building code always get screwed :(

The Northridge quake felt different than anyone I'd ever felt before. It was a massive upward thrust. There wasn't the typical pre rumbling buildup.

I actually ran to the window thinking LA had just been nuked and it was a bomb wave I'd felt.

And the aftershocks for weeks were unreal. After that I said goodbye to LA for good.
