shipping content with FedEx

Yeah this sounds totally lame of me to do, but I was in a huge hurry to ship a batch of content I shot last night and today. So I set my camera up to dupe the video ( I normally make backups of my tapes ) and I realize it's a half hour before the overnight ship deadline at FedEx, and it's a 45 minute tape. So in a flurry of last-minute frustration I pop the tape, and get there just before they close the doors, and I shipped the content.

I insured it at $500 even though it's worth $1,800 and I asked the lady if they would reimburse me if they lost it. She said they'd "repair or replace it", so I guess they'd hire out another content producer to shoot it again? haha

Am I completely fucking nuts for shipping without making backups?? Or should I have faith in FedEx?? I'm doing some serious thinking as to the risks behind what I just did...

FedEx handed off a $25k money order to the wrong address on me back in 2000, I completely fucking lost it on them, they wouldn't have replaced it if they had not recovered it either, thankfully the person they delivered it to wasn't home and it was sitting on their front porch in an envelope.

I'll never use them again.

gregtx 12-29-2003 08:56 PM

we use fedex daily and have yet to have any problems delivering content.. whether it be raw mini dv tapes from our studios or just cds to our webmasters... plus they have never broken any of our media.... :2 cents:

gornyhuy 12-29-2003 08:59 PM

I fedexed ONE cd in a padded CD shipping envelope that was also wrapped in bubble tape and then put inside a bigger fedex envelope.

It was shattered upon arrival.

Explain that shit to me.

interesting.. I didn't think money orders can be made for $25K
most have a cap of $500-1000 ... and a cashiers check would be made out to a specific person... or company name.. typed out by the issuing bank.. not an accusation.. just an observation:)

funny you mentioned that i was thinking the same $25K money order ? That can be quite dangerous if it landed on the wrong hands of some crook. Like it happened to me back in 98 my mom sent me a money order of 800USD and it got stollen in the process of getting it delivered to me , there was nothing i could have done even tracing the person who signed for it , i have no idea what happened but the fucker was able to cash it successfully ....

webgurl 12-29-2003 09:20 PM

nevertheless, I trust FedEx been using them for some time and no problems yet :thumbsup

The issuing bank told me in a letter that it was a money order, I figured it was, I don't deal with US banks and that's what it was drawn on. Symantics, both are as good as cash, both are issued to a company or an individual (At least money orders I've made out have been).

Contacted the customer, the content made it there safely. Thank god!

sumphatpimp 12-30-2003 09:24 PM

the guy who started FedEx wrote about it in a college paper.
instructor said "that will never work" so all you people are very lucky.

my new Wacom Intruos tablet (9x12) shipped from Vancover, Washington yesterday, arrived here in Pa. today about 1PM today.

no problem.

:thumbsup

You're completely fucking nuts for insuring it for $500.

All that does is prompt questions and that is not usually a good thing....Especially if you sent it out of the US.

When they ask me the value of what I am sending...I tell them $7.00 or so.

AllisonWonderland 12-30-2003 09:57 PM

The FedEx envelopes have some blurb on them about not shipping negotiable instruments in them, and assorted disclaimers about what they will and won't replace. I don't have one in front of me, or I'd post it verbatim.

the original model for fedex was extremely controversial at the time. in fact the company was on the verge of bankruptcy a few times in the early days.

once the volumes of shipments increased and a few small adjustments were made to their processing, they became a success fairly quickly.

MetaformX 12-30-2003 10:03 PM

I only ship sperm with fed ex

pornJester 12-30-2003 10:07 PM

For some reason I don't think FedEx insurance covers video content production costs.

I could be wrong though.

foolio 12-30-2003 10:42 PM

I have had soooo much stuff crushed via fed ex. Hell one package got to its destination and had TIRE TRACKS on it! WTF!

GonePhishing 12-30-2003 10:44 PM

Fedex is the best shipping company there is. I have had friends who have worked at both places. The UPS guys used to actively steal and bring home, "stuff they found driving."

basschick 12-30-2003 10:47 PM

i've never had a bad experience with fedex, but for all you know, someone is shipping a large magnet in the box next to your tape. or the truck could be blown up in a freak accident.

ALWAYS make backups!

gornyhuy 12-30-2003 10:54 PM

Glad it got there for ya!

Now START DRINKING.

yes, that and if they want to know what it is say it's educational and/or research materials.
