why isn't china a consumer based economy and will it even happen?

I think it will happen but slowly.

is there any hope of them getting the type of government that would allow it? i just can't understand why a country with so many people isn't a consumer based economy. It's crazy.

Maybe it will maybe it wont. Western influence is slowly be seen in China and its leaders are human and will want all the nice things that come with being part of a global economy.
The Chinese people will remember Tienamen Square forever. Todays chinese youth maybe the leaders of China someday and will exact change.
So then we can bring porno by the truck loads into that country. Internext will be in Bejing someday.

I read an article about China a year or so ago. It said it would happen over there but it would take time in years, not months. There seems to be a lot of factors that would determine it, mainly the government and the people that are already in line to take certain posts etc.

I agree it is due to the gov... and the change will take some time... ppl are not stupid but they have to get their act together to stand up to the gov

It's gonna happen sooner rather than later if the current reform efforts persist. China's economy is already growing at 8% year after year. Car sales rates are some of the highest in the world. It's gonna happen. The only question is... will the world be ready for a middle class China.

China is going to be a bitch to deal with.

if and when it happens the people who are capable to take advantage are going to have unreal growths in their business. im pretty sure gates has already setup his connections over in china.

I read an interesting article about China the other day. The reporter had been one of the BBC's chinese correpondents over there for a good few years. He called it the longest plan ever conceived by a government. Very heavily dependant on not upsetting the US (hence their low key objections to Iraq etc.) . He reckoned it's been going on for decades silently, and will only take another ten years or so before China is a true superpower, economically and militarily. Then he reckons it will be 'interesting times'.

I don't know when it will happen but sure it will. I've been to China (Beijing) some 10 years ago and there were special stores just for tourists where locals were not allowed. I think things are changing but slowly.
