64-bit AMD Opteron & MySQL?
Anyone put together a 64-bit AMD Opteron server to run their Mysql Database(s)?
If so, how do you like it? Any problems? Better than Dual Xeons? |
man, there's a benchmark just out over at http://anandtech.com, opterons kick the fucking shit out of dual xeons.

Good god, why on Earth would you need an Opteron?

MySQL & AMD have never boded well for me...on high load systems I find AMD for whatever reason has serious problems keeping it together.
When it comes to MySQL I stick with pentium chips...seems a lot better in stability. |

That is a good question? Our current DB servers handle the load just fine. Always keeping an eye to the future . . . :winkwink: |
A really huge dutch community has recently switched to Dual Opterons for their backend (they've got a Dual Opteron 242 and a Dual Opteron 240). Both are database servers only. They've replaced them for Dual MP 1600+'s, although the processor speed hasn't upgraded, the load went down with 66%.
Needless to say that they are very happy with the servers :) On the other hand, they've got 4x Dual Xeons clustered for the html work though ;) |
I've been working on a dual opteron this week setting up MySQL... it screams, I think it benchmarked comparably to a quad p4 xeon we've got.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I just want to set up a nice DB server and not have to worry about it. Rather spend the money now on hardware and not have to think about whether or not it will handle the load in 6 months.
Any info any of you have using the opteron is great info to have! thanks again . . . |
