need advice for dedicated server offer
Hi,
I found a dedicated server offer for 99$, no setup fees. But i never been on a dedicated server, i know nothing about this, and i mean zero, even Microsoft server system...So i would need some advice from enlighten webmasters. This is the package offer: Intel Celeron 1.8 GHz (400 MHz FSB) mme: 512 MB hd: 60 GB band: 500 GB os: Windows Server 2003 Web Edition network: Dual 100 Megabit features: Services Remote Desktop (Terminal Services) Hardware Monitoring/Alerting FREE Unlimited Reboots Microsoft Windows Update Detailed Usage Reports Account Management Interface Technical E-mail Notifications ActiveServe DNS Manager Software: Microsoft Internet Information Services 6.0 Windows Server 2003 Web Interface Microsoft .NET Framework Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer ASP.NET Microsoft Component Services Active Server Pages (Classic ASP) ODBC Data Source Administrator Microsoft DNS Services Microsoft Management Console Microsoft FTP Services FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions Microsoft E-Mail Services Microsoft Indexing Service ASP.NET Web Matrix Backup Utility for Windows XML Web Services Guarantees 24 Hour Hardware Replacement 99.9% Network Uptime Guarantee Operating System Restore No Contract, No Obligation! They say they have no problem with adult webmaster. That sounds interesting for my gallery hosting. However they are a new Cie i think...I don't see any comments about that...They also have the same offer with a P4 1.8 at 109$. This looks ok to you ? |
I looks like a good deal, but if they are brand new, then you could get burned... I got burned twice on VERY cheap deals... I will NEVER do it again!
|
Stick with a reputable company for a deal like that. If it's not servermatrix or Rackshack the control panel issues will probably kill you... not to mention the lack of security. :ak47:
|
That the thing that badder me. I am responsable for the security of the server. I mean i can put Kerio firewall and AVG antivirus, but when it comes to further server protections, there is much more to it...
|
dude... why would you even consider running windows? do you not care about data integrity?
|
Yes, i do! A lot, i was a computer repairman before that job. I would prefer a redhat system. I have more doubts about the system then the actual hardware. Servermatrix looks more like it for me. It look nicer and do a bit more management then the others.

Sorry man, but your price doesn't meet my budget. I would go broke in a matter of months, and that wouldn't be wise. But thanks for the advices, i appreciate.
I think that getting burn is part of the process, but you don't want to get too much burn...that goes without saying. |
Your computer will be hosted on a desktop box and not a real server. Wouldn't be surprised if it was an overclocked celeron either. The bandwidth will be pure cogent.
Chances are, if you can't afford a dedicated server at a reputable hosting company (webair, oxeo, sinhost, etc), then you probably don't need one. I don't think their dedicated prices will suit your budget, but see my sig to check out the virtual plans at webair. Happy customer here. |
I am already in a virtual plan (realitychecknetwork, they are pretty good with cobaltweb too), i was searching for a 400 to 500 gig of bandwith, to be able to afford thehun bandwith at a more suitable price.
the first one i was talking is : http://www.activeserve.com/ Well i will check back later. I have a christmas food desert to prepare and go to bank make a deposit of 400$US :) . |

ServerMatrix are very good people. Their prices are hard to beat in terms oftheir support and hardware. I've used them in the past, and only left for a cheaper solution with a partnership with someone.
The thing about the adult business is that many people haven't browsed through the entire hosting scope, and they're limited to hosts like CandidHosting, National-Net, etc. because those are the only hosts they've heard of. There are many mainstream hosts that offer better hosting packages at very competitive prices and the same (if not better) support. |
I have a server at ServerMatrix and they are kick ass!
|
ok first step.
Look at all that software. Look up the prices of each package. Divide that by the length of your contract. Then figure out what the server is going to cost the company. Dive that by the length of your contract also. second step. If your figures come up less than what they are going to charge you then figure out how they are offering this GREAT deal without making a profit and putting themselves in the loss column. Third Step. If you care at all about your business protect it by contacting a reputable hosting company where the figures do add up. |

Definitely avoid windows, its horrible not only because of security issues but also performance. FreeBSD is definitely the way to go and like someone said before if you cant justify a decent price for a dedicated server then you definitely dont need one. If you are looking for about 500GB of bandwidth to burn hit me up on icq at 36837470 I can set you up on a semi-dedicated machine (a couple of users per machine) with pricing very near $99 over quality multihomed bandwidth like Level3, MFN Abovenet, NYIIX, and others.
Good luck. :thumbsup |
hey thanks for all the inputs. Will certainly helps me making a better judgement. I will try to read a bit more about it too...
As for a windows system, you don't have to convince me too much about it :winkwink: . After all, i begun repairing computer with the crappy Win95 A. That leaves you with memorable and eternal moments about Microsoft... |
If you need a fully managed box consider Uncensored-Hosting
|
Servermatrix and Rackshack are both great hosts, bandwidth as good and usally much better than so called "premium" hosts, no cogent at either one on the regular metered boxes.
However, if you are not extremely familar with managing a server, its a very, very bad idea. You might get lucky or you might get owned in 24 hours, all the draw of the cards. |
