10D or D100...That's the Question

Say Santa put a check in your stocking for $2000 for a digital camera, to go towards either the Canon 10D or the Nikon D100. What would you chose? Or do you have another preference? Any input on these two cameras would be great. I'll be looking for a lens that is wide angle, like mabye 28-80 to start with.

Oh ya! Merry Christmas!!!

KraZ 12-24-2003 03:07 AM

I'm a fan of Canon's so it's the 10D ...

SGS 12-24-2003 03:09 AM

We use the Nikons but if we were to start all over again we would look at the Canon very carefully. Its a great camera. :2 cents:

Love my D100.....it's a lot of camera.

Just got the 10D. Prior to this, I had the D30 and D60.

Love it.

Especially the auto-rotate feature that remembers the way you shot it (portrait or landscape) and rotates it when you download. Way cool and quite a time saver in itself.

When I got the 10D, I also added the power pack, 2 extra batteries, two 512Meg cards, EZ flash, and lenses (Canon 18-40, 24-70, and 70-300 IS).

Came to a little more than $2,000 :BangBang: More like $5,000. But what the hell... it'll make it all back for me.

I'm sure the Nikon is good, too, but the D1H would be the one to get, but it's even more expensive and would take longer for payback... and image quality would be the same.

Why pay more than you have to? It only takes longer to make the money back.

10D

Mikey_219Inc 12-24-2003 05:12 AM

i love the d-100, but if anyone has both ... or if you do opt for the canon, id love to hear your comments

RawAlex 12-24-2003 05:12 AM

10D if Santa has the cash, digital rebel (d300) if he doesn't.... everything in the Canon line has very nice image quality...

;-)

definitely the 10D!

My Dad is a professional Photographer. He tried all the Nikon shit and was never lucky with it. Now he is using Canon, two 1D's and two 10D and he loves them.

JFK 12-24-2003 06:30 AM

love the D100 , never tried the Canon, altough the auto rotate system sounds great :2 cents:

xenigo 12-24-2003 06:36 AM

I shoot with a D30 at the moment and I had the opportunity to mess around with Laura from Socalcash's D100 and I was pretty impressed. So impressed that I might have to change teams.

What's got me boggled is the fact that the Canon Rebel is everywhere, and it's got it's own 28-55m lense and runs $500 less for the 10D and the D100. To get the two higher grade bodies, and a lense is an easy $2000, w/o filters, b/u batteries, external flash. If I settled for the Rebel, I could get much more for my $$, but would I saccrifice quality? That's the last thing I want to do.

You all totally rock for the help...definately looking at the 10D more and more now...

VirtuMike 12-24-2003 10:06 AM

I've been looking to drop my nikon d1x and replace it with a MUCH cheaper 10D - or -

SIGMA

The sigma has the foveon chip. It only uses sigma lenses, which aren't bad, but the chip inside there is far better than anything at four times the price.

I paid for my D1x several times over already - put tens of thousands of pics on it - and I kind of abuse the thing. But the Canons look really good.

VideoJ 12-24-2003 11:10 AM

The 10D is a real nice camera, we're using and abusing it. Can't go wrong with either though.

GonePhishing 12-24-2003 11:33 AM

I've been a nikon user for life. I've had a couple cannons at well. They are both really good companies. I am partial to the d100, but I could totally understand why some would rather have the cannon

Cole Montana 12-24-2003 01:15 PM

Sweet... funny thing happend today. I'm talking to the owner of a camera shop and he told me that the Cannon 10D and Rebel are almost identical, except for a couple features. But for the most part, there's only a slight drop in software in the Rebel.

Any thoughts or input on this? Nikon is no longer a question. It's out the door. I'm hearing to many good things about Canon

Dax 12-24-2003 01:27 PM

I would buy the Fuji S2...

Actually i have shot with all 3 and i just ordered an S2

Nembrionic 12-24-2003 01:34 PM

Quite simple:

if you're a Canon fan, go for the 10D
Nikon fan? D100

You have canon lensen lying aroung? 10D
Likewise for Nikon.

that's all there is too it.

Ic3m4nZ 12-24-2003 01:36 PM

Canon

brothenberg 12-24-2003 01:37 PM

10D, Canon Lenses are doing pretty well now too.

Bigjohn 12-24-2003 01:49 PM

I went to buy myself an early Christmas present a few months ago and was planning on purchasing the d100 but after the salesman got through showing me the differences and letting me play with both cameras I chose the Canon 10d. I also looked at the Rebel as an option but with the extra speed and features of the 10d I felt the spending the extra $$$ was worth it.

I also got a 1 gig card, extra battery holder/side handle and a 28-105 lense. The 10d is an awesome camera!

Nembrionic 12-24-2003 02:05 PM

oh btw, I don't know about the battery pack for the 10D, but I know the D100 can go for a LONG time before you need to recharge...

Cole Montana 12-24-2003 06:32 PM

FUCKING GRRRRREAT! I decide to go with the 10D and find that they are all gone. That camera stops shooting after 40,000 clicks. It was a big promo for the D1 which is about 6gs. Out of my league. So I won't be getting the 10D anytime soon, unless I can find one left hidden on a shelf.

But now I am intruiged by the Sigma. I've never heard of it before.

Those of you who have the 10D lucky you! lol I just picked the wrong time of year to really get into shooting content.

vidvicious 12-27-2003 09:20 AM

the Sigma, Canon 10 d and Nikon D100 are all in the same bal park .. really it boils donw to what kind of lens you already have or are willing to by .. Most Sigma lens are cheaper then Canon or Nikon .. How ever sigma makes lens for these other manifactures too .. I opted for the Canon .. they got good chip quality .. by the way your Photography shop owner was pretty off when he told you the Rebel and 10 d are pretty much the same .. Different Chip sets and processing and a very different Prism .. also the body is made of plastic. I had bough tmy 10d before the Digi Rebel came out .. was completely freaked out .. then I decided to take a closer look .. I brought a friend with that actually ended up buying the rebel .. once we got home we did some comparison shots, same subject, same lighting, same Fstop .. and found the pics on the 10 d to be way superior ... Final Deciding factor should be, How often you gonna shoot ? (do you need a work horse or just a pretty one) and Price point ...

not an easy choice

loverboy 12-27-2003 09:30 AM

it seems your decided to purchase the 10D. Canon is among
the popular choice of proffessional photograhers.
for more in-depth review about the 10D and D100. you can also try to check out their affiliate merchants for product availability.
hope this helps you out. just bought A80 for my personal
use and works perfect :thumbsup

:1orglaugh but sometimes it's like a real 'vital question' - there are real NIKON fetishist and so are CANON freaks.
Think all current brands are somewhat good, but also have their individual assets and drawbacks.
Most important 'seems' to be the photographer :)

PhotoGreggXXX 12-27-2003 10:26 AM

They all SUCK!!!!

My damn 10d decided to die right before the cum shot yesterday....ooops my 40,000 clicks only lasted 4 months.

Now I have to buy a backup, and wait a month or two to get my original camera back from the shop.

Went through 5 Olympus digital cameras in 2 years...you'de think someone would come up with a camera for pro's that will last.

We have both and although we also have the D1x I would suggest the Canon as the better camera . You will also find the customer support at Canon 100 times better than Nikon who's customer support stinks

Rictor 12-27-2003 10:37 AM

If you go with the digital Rebel, you'd have a thousand bucks left over to buy a lens or two for it.

Hey PhotoGregg
You may want to take a look at the Kodak 14 meg camera, the guys at LegalPictures have been using one for about 9 months now and the last time i talked to them had shot more than 120,000 images without a problem, they like the camera so much they got two more last month. So maybe its worth a look ?
